Your John Mayer Concert Experience Guide

What Is It Like to See John Mayer Live?

Sphere Residency 2027

He asks a full arena whether "Your Body Is a Wonderland" is a joke before he plays it, then spends two hours on a set that rotated through 124 different songs on one solo tour.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
    Bring a sign.

He reads them from the stage, sometimes plays the request and sometimes turns it down. Make it a deep cut, not a Prince song; the best sign stories are in [Fan Culture](#fan-culture-and-traditions).

  • 2
No opener has been named for the [Sphere](/venues/sphere) run.

Each 2027 night is a solo set, a full band set and a John Mayer Trio set, so Mayer fills the evening himself. On the 2023 solo arena dates, the openers included Alec Benjamin, Joy Oladokun and JP Saxe.

  • 3
    Learn a few Trio songs.

The Trio is Mayer with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan, and its sets lean blues-rock. "Vultures" and "Who Did You Think I Was" were in the Trio chapter last time it toured, in 2017.

  • 4
    Watch the guitar changes.

The resonator comes out for "Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967" and a Martin double-neck acoustic for "Edge of Desire."

  • 5
Save your voice for "Free Fallin'."

The Tom Petty cover is the song the whole room sings back; the story is in [Fan Culture](#fan-culture-and-traditions).

  • 6

The 2023 solo dates had city-specific event tees that later turned up in the official web store. Details in [Merch](#merch).

What It's Actually Like

No Two Setlists Match

Mayer does not run a fixed show. setlist.fm logs 124 different songs, 30 of them covers, across 62 Solo tour shows, and even the full band Sob Rock tour used 67 songs across 32 nights. Only a few songs are near-locks: "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" was played at every one of the 62 solo dates, "Who Says" and "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me" at 59. The rest moves, and so does the hit count. At the Inglewood close of the spring 2023 leg, Billboard counted just two of his seven top 20 singles in the set, while fans yelling requests at once got him to dig out "3x5" from his first album. If you came for one specific song, you might not get it. If you came to hear what he feels like playing tonight, you will.

He Roasts His Own Biggest Song

The talking is half the show, and most of it is at his own expense. On opening night of the 2023 solo tour in Newark he stopped before "Your Body Is a Wonderland" to ask, "Is this song stupid? I don't know," then promised, "I'm gonna play it like it's not a joke." In St. Paul he described himself as someone who sings "sincerely but dance[s] ironically." At Chase Center in November 2023 he said his goal for the song was to find the one person "not enjoying the song" and watch their face change, and the screens cut to the crowd while he played it. He tells the same handful of stories (calling Andy Cohen before the tour to say "Andy, I'm nervous," his 95-year-old dad, retiring old songs to a "penalty box"), but he tells them to the room in front of him. At Mohegan Sun Arena on October 9, 2026, it was "I know what your kitchen looks like; I have the same kitchen," a Connecticut kid talking to a Connecticut crowd.

“I don't have to win anyone over anymore. I just want to be here and sing along with you.”

Watch His Hands, Not the Screens

People come to see a guitar player, and the solo shows make that obvious. He cycles through a 12-string for "Heartbreak Warfare," a resonator for "Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967," and a Martin double-neck for "If I Ever Get Around to Living" and "Edge of Desire," then moves to a baby grand for "Changing" and finishes it with an electric solo over a looped piano part. A fan blogger who has seen him five times wrote after the Hollywood, Florida show in September 2023 that "John's so good, you barely miss the band," and noticed the capo and alternate tunings from the crowd. "Edge of Desire" is the late-set peak: at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on March 25, 2023 he played it acoustic under a strobe and the room, as the local reviewer put it, "really lost their shit."

On a Full Band Night, Everything Gets Longer

With a band behind him the show gets longer in the middle, not the ends. "Helpless" and "Changing" turn into guitar jams, and at Madison Square Garden in February 2022 Greg Phillinganes traded keytar runs with him on "Helpless." "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" opens up so David Ryan Harris can sing a falsetto verse of Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" in the middle, which happened at 31 of 32 Sob Rock shows and in Providence in 2019. In Providence the band also slid "Queen of California" straight into the Grateful Dead's "Fire on the Mountain" with Dead symbols on the screen.

Three Generations, Plus the Deadheads

After the 2023 St. Paul show, the Star Tribune put it plainly: Mayer is to Gen X what James Taylor is to boomers. You'll see all three. A student reviewer counted fans from 15 to 70 at one solo arena date, including someone on show number sixteen, and the fan blogger in Hollywood, Florida noticed a mostly female crowd going "nuts" for deep cuts as well as hits. Since 2015 there's a fourth group, the people who found him through Dead & Company; more on them in Fan Culture. On opening night in Newark the arena erupted at the first notes of "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room," then settled in to listen.

Sphere Residency 2027 (2027)

21 shows at Sphere in Las Vegas, April 8 to June 12, 2027, per JamBase. It's his first Sphere run under his own name, after 48 concerts in that room with Dead & Company in 2024 and 2025.

Three Sets, One Ticket

Every night has three parts: Mayer solo (acoustic guitar, with piano and electric guitar), a full band set, and the John Mayer Trio with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan, which Guitar World notes is the Trio's first time playing together since 2023. casino.org lists the run as "Solo + Full Band + John Mayer Trio." JamBase points out the format "revisits an approach Mayer used on his 2017 The Search For Everything Tour," when the show ran in chapters on screen. No fan reports exist yet, because the run hasn't started.

How the Run Grew

Six April dates were announced on September 29, 2026. Demand tripled that to 18, and on October 13 JamBase reported June 9, 11 and 12 added for 21 total. Artist presale for the June dates opened October 14 with general sale October 16, and earlier presale codes stayed valid. One dollar from every ticket goes to Mayer's Back To You Fund, and a ticket for each show is auctioned for the Heart and Armor Foundation, which supports veterans' health. On resale for the early weekend shows, casino.org found upper-level entry near $400 and lower-level seats around $3,500 in mid-October.

What He Has Been Playing Alone Lately

The best preview of the solo third is his 2026 shows. In February he played his first concerts in India (Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Mumbai, February 11), then Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. At Mohegan Sun on October 9, 2026, in front of 10,000-plus, he opened with "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room," sat at a grand piano for "Changing," covered "XO," yodeled through a snippet of Tex Owens' "Cattle Call," and pulled out a custom 12-string National resonator for "Walt Grace." The encore was "Gravity."

After Bob Weir

Bob Weir's death was announced January 10, 2026. A week later Mayer gave the eulogy at the Homecoming memorial at Civic Center Plaza and closed it playing "Ripple" on Weir's own acoustic guitar for about 20,000 people: "Bob took a chance on me. He staked his entire reputation on my joining a band with him."

What's Exclusive

The 2023 solo dates had city "Event Tees" printed for individual shows, each with the date on it. Five of them, from Palm Springs to Sacramento, are listed in the official online store. The Solo Tour photo long-sleeve and the KSBRK Radio tee are marked sold out there.

The Strategy

Because the city tees stayed online after the dates, you don't have to fight the stand for one on show night. The pieces that did sell out online were the Solo Tour photo long-sleeve and the KSBRK Radio tee. No fan report documents a venue sell-out or restock pattern yet.

Quality Verdict

The Solo Tour tee is 100% cotton, with the art on the front and the dates on the back. No fan has posted a quality verdict beyond that.

Frequently Asked Questions

A guitar player talking you through his own catalogue, with a setlist that changes nightly. On solo nights he sits on an office chair with a rack of guitars and a baby grand, and tells stories between nearly every song. At MSG in March 2023 he called it "turning it into a living room and hanging out."

About two hours of Mayer. St. Paul, Hollywood, Florida and Mohegan Sun all ran about two hours. No running time has been published yet for the three-set Sphere nights.

Around 9 PM, whatever the ticket says. At MSG on October 3, 2023 the scheduled time was 7:30 PM and he started at 9:00, two and a half hours after doors; setlist.fm attendee timing puts the Solo tour average at 2h 15m after doors. On the 2022 Sob Rock tour he hit the MSG stage "just before 9 p.m."
