What Is It Like to See James Blunt Live?
He spends the night roasting himself, plays "Goodbye My Lover" alone at the piano, and then leaves the stage to high-five his way around the floor during a Slade cover.
What to Know Before You Go
- 1It's half stand-up
He swears, apologises for swearing, mocks his own songs and teases the men who didn't want to come. If you only know the hits, the jokes are the surprise.
- 2Floor edges and aisle seats are the good seats
During his cover of Slade's "Coz I Luv You" he leaves the stage and does a lap of the room. That's when people get high fives, hugs and selfies. More on that in [Fan Culture](#fan-culture-and-traditions).
- 3Phone torch ready for "Same Mistake"
He asks for it, the house lights go down, and the arena turns into a field of lights.
- 4"You're Beautiful" doesn't wait for the encore
It was the second song every night of the 2025 tour. Don't be in the bar queue when the lights go down.
- 5Brought a reluctant partner?
He will ask who was dragged along and make them put their hands up. Everyone laughs, including them.
- 6"Monsters" is the one that wrecks people
It's about his father's illness. On the 2025 tour it opened the encore with family photos on the screen. Tissues are not a joke suggestion.
- 7Openers
None named yet for the 2027 Airplane Mode dates. Recent legs had Toploader (UK 2025), Forest Blakk (North America 2025), Go-Jo (Australia 2025) and Lucy Spraggan (UK 2024).
- 8Merch you can wait on
Recent tour shirts stayed on his official online store after the tours ended, at a discount. Details in the [Merch](#merch) section.

What It's Actually Like
He Roasts Himself Before You Can
The first thing that hits you isn't the voice. It's that he's funny, and mean about himself, and he doesn't stop. At MGM Music Hall on June 16, 2025, he apologised for his language and blamed it on being British, called fans who use "You're Beautiful" as a wedding song "sickos," and said he wrote it "while I was high and stalking a girl on public transportation" (Music Scene Media). On Valentine's Day 2020 he thanked the arena for spending the night with his "miserable songs," and the Guardian's Dave Simpson caught him riffing on Elton John's advice to always play the hits: "That's me fucked. I'd have to play You're Beautiful 22 times." The Guardian's read is that the troll-baiting, self-deprecating voice he built on Twitter is the same one that turns up on stage. If you follow the account, you already know the tone. If you don't, you'll be surprised how much of the night you spend laughing at a man who made his name on breakup ballads.
"Goodbye My Lover" Goes Quiet, Then the Piano Turns Into a Stage
The band walks off and it's Blunt alone at the piano for "Goodbye My Lover." It has been staged that way for years: solo at the piano on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury on June 28, 2008 (NME), and again on every 2025 date reviewed. In Adelaide on October 28, 2025 a single spotlight held on him and he took his leather jacket off to play it (The Note). Then, later in the same show, that piano is a prop. He leaped on top of it at a UK arena date on April 6, 2024 (UK Music Reviews), finished another 2024 UK arena show standing on it, and "surfed the piano" during "1973" in Adelaide. Same instrument, one tender moment and one daft one.
“It's all downhill from here because that was the hit.”
The Room Starts Seated and He Won't Have It
A Blunt crowd sits down. A lot of the rooms are seated arenas, and people arrive expecting a quiet night of sad songs. He knows this. At an all-seated 2018 arena date in New Zealand he opened with "You probably thought you'd come in, sit down, and hear me play a bunch of sad songs," and The Spinoff's reviewer still complained the crowd behaved like a school assembly. A fan at a November 2014 UK arena show was annoyed that staff kept making people sit when they wanted to dance (Loud Memories fan review), and a fan at a 2022 show in Germany said that even with seated restrictions "James made sure it became a big party." Before the final songs he orders everyone up. In Adelaide it was "Chairs are no longer valid." At Rod Laver Arena on October 26, 2025 it was "they're just for your handbags, gentlemen" (Sheldon Ang Media). By the end of most nights people are dancing in the aisles.
Louder and Rougher Than the Record
If you know him from soft-rock radio, the band will surprise you. Reviewing The O2 Arena on February 16, 2025, the New Statesman found the arrangements heavier than the albums' gentle strumming and his voice more powerful and less reliant on falsetto (New Statesman). "So Long, Jimmy" turns into a blues-rock jam with guitar and keyboard solos, and at MGM Music Hall in June 2025 it got people dancing (Music Scene Media). The voice isn't flawless. In Adelaide he admitted it was "generally quite fucked" that night and nearly dropped "Monsters," and the front section sang him through it. A fan review on Bandsintown put the other side plainly: "James on the other hand sings beautifully and clearly. You can hear every word."
The Hits Come Early, the Last Two Never Change
He doesn't hide "You're Beautiful" until the end. At the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington in May 2014 the audience sang almost the whole thing for him (Pip Squeaks fan blog). What doesn't move is the finish: "Bonfire Heart" into "1973." That pair closed Wellington in 2014, Birmingham in 2020, and the last show of the 2025 tour in Perth. setlist.fm logs "1973" 577 times, second only to "You're Beautiful" at 656, so if there's one song you're guaranteed to jump around to, it's that one. Deep-cut hunters won't get much rotation night to night. You get a setlist built to land the same jokes and the same peaks every time.
Couples, Bedlam Buyers and the Kids They Raised
The crowd is mostly couples and the women who bought the debut, now joined by people who grew up on it. A 2008 Wolverhampton Civic Hall review counted fans from primary-school age to about 70, with reluctant partners in tow. A 2014 fan blogger in Wellington saw mostly couples over 40 dancing at the front. On the 2025 North American leg, Music Scene Media saw mostly older Millennials and at least one person openly crying. At Rod Laver Arena in 2025, Sheldon Ang Media spotted 2005 originals next to people who first heard the songs in their parents' cars. So the mood is nostalgia with punchlines. You laugh at him, then a ballad lands, and the person next to you is wiping their face.
Airplane Mode Tour (2027)
37 announced dates, February 17 to April 8, 2027, across Europe, the UK and Ireland. Arenas.
What's Been Announced
The tour follows his ninth album, Airplane Mode, out November 6, 2026, most of it recorded with his touring band at Pig Music Studios in Banbury (MELODIC Magazine). It opens at Rockhal in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, on February 17 and ends on the south coast of England on April 8. The UK and Ireland leg starts March 26 and includes the O2 on April 4 (Hello Rayo; Hot Press). Album pre-orders unlocked the presale. His own line on the record: "Somewhere back there, I lost my way, but found it again in a studio in Banbury." No support acts or production details have been announced, so the nearest guide is the run he just finished.
What the Back to Bedlam Run Looked Like
The 2025 Back to Bedlam 20th Anniversary Tour opened each night with a video montage of 20 years of pop culture, so the room was already laughing at 2005 before he walked out (X-Press Magazine). A big screen across the back of the stage ran colourful patterns, with side screens following him and the band (The Blurb). "No Bravery," written after his NATO service in Kosovo in 1999, played against grainy footage of war damage. "Monsters," about his father's kidney disease, opened the encore with family photos on screen. "Postcards" came out on two ukuleles in Perth. One outfit all night: jeans, white tee, brown leather jacket, which one reviewer compared to a Primark run.
The Album Is Over, You Can Go Home
The 2025 gimmick was Back to Bedlam played front to back in running order, ten songs from "High" to "No Bravery," and then a run of later hits. The New Statesman noted "Out of My Mind" and "No Bravery" hadn't been played in 18 years, and in Perth he said playing the full album finally let the non-singles breathe. When the album finished he told the men who'd been forced to come that they could leave now. At the June 2025 MGM Music Hall show nobody did. He also ran a fake vote, offering a "new two hour album (that doesn't actually exist)" or the old songs. Both reported times the crowd picked the old songs, and at Rod Laver Arena he groaned, "You never choose the f***ing new music, I don't even have a new album!" With a real new album out in November 2026, expect that bit to change. The one consistent criticism of recent shows is the energy dip when he plays newer material, which the New Statesman spotted at the O2.
Openers on Recent Legs
Toploader opened at the O2 in February 2025 and joked that they might not play "Dancing in the Moonlight." Forest Blakk played a 45-minute set on the North American leg. In Australia it was Go-Jo, that year's Eurovision entrant, who closed with "Milkshake Man" and in Perth went straight to the merch desk to sell his own shirts and meet people. On the 2024 UK arena run, Lucy Spraggan played ten songs to a room that had come in early for her (UK Music Reviews). The 2027 openers are not yet named.
VIP Packages Named After Songs
Recent VIP tiers were branded with his song titles, for example a "Goodbye My Lover Up Close Experience" and a "Wisemen Fan Package" on the 2025 European dates (berlin.de ticket listing). What those packages included, and whether fans thought they were worth it, isn't documented anywhere we could find. If you're tempted, read the inclusions closely before paying.

What's Exclusive
Each recent tour had its own dated shirts: a Who We Used to Be Tour tee in natural and charcoal, and a "BLUNT+" logo Back to Bedlam range for the 20th anniversary, plus a tour bundle and a vinyl bundle on the official store. The fun part is the branding. On the 2024 UK arena run the stand was called "Blunty's," selling his own clothing line, with ads showing Rishi Sunak and Kim Jong Un in his shirts under the line "JOIN THE B LIST" (Pocklington Post). Openers sometimes sell at the same desk: Go-Jo did in Perth and met fans there after his set. No city-specific posters or limited drops have turned up.
The Strategy
There's no need to panic-buy. The Who We Used to Be and Back to Bedlam lines were still on store.jamesblunt.com in October 2026, after both tours had ended, and marked down below the list prices. We found no sell-out or restock stories from any recent tour. If you want the dated tour shirt, you can buy it later, and probably cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's a comedy set wrapped around a ballad show. He mocks his own songs and his wedding-song fans, then sits alone at the piano for "Goodbye My Lover" and the room goes silent. A video montage of 2005 opened the 2025 shows, and by the last two songs he has the seated arena on its feet.
About 1h 50m on the most recent tour. The Blurb timed his October 2025 set at Rod Laver Arena at 110 minutes, and the setlists from that tour ran 19 songs including the encore.
Yes, constantly, and he apologises for it up front. In June 2025 he opened by blaming his language on being British. A lot of it is aimed at himself, as when he told a 2024 arena crowd booing the idea of the new album in full, "It's too late, I've got your money! Sit down and f***ing enjoy it!" (Pocklington Post).
Yes, and better than the records suggest. Reviewers at the O2 in 2025 heard heavier arrangements and a stronger voice than on the albums, and "So Long, Jimmy" becomes a blues-rock jam. His voice can get rough late in a run, as it did in Adelaide in October 2025, and that night the front rows sang him through "Monsters."
Close to the listed stage time, usually somewhere between 8pm and 9pm. The O2 in February 2025 had him on between 8pm and 8:30pm with an early Sunday curfew ([Time Out](https://www.timeout.com/london/news/james-blunt-at-londons-o2-arena-start-time-tickets-potential-setlist-and-what-you-need-to-know-021525)), and a 2024 arena date in Scotland listed him around 9pm ([The Scotsman](https://scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/music/james-blunt-glasgow-hydro-set-times-support-tickets-setlist-4576349)). We found no complaints about late starts.
Yes, especially if you think you don't like him. Reviews from 2014 to 2025 keep singling out the banter, and The Spinoff's 2018 reviewer called it the best she'd seen from any musician. Fans who already love the songs get a band that plays them harder than the records.
"1973" is the one to wait for, the closer that gets the whole room moving. "Goodbye My Lover" is the hush, "Same Mistake" is the phone-torch song, and "Monsters" is the one people cry at. On the 2025 tour "Out of My Mind" and "No Bravery" came back after 18 years away.
Probably, because the jokes don't need the back catalogue. Just don't arrive late: it was the second song every night in 2025, after which he told the crowd it was all downhill from there.
The songs and the closer have stayed, but the comedy has grown. Mid-2000s reviews talk about a sold-out theatre singer and a crowd of devoted women, while 2014 fans were already calling it a comedy show, and by 2025 the self-roasting banter and the stories behind the songs (his wife's suggestion, he told Perth) were as much of the night as the music. The 2008 arena tour had a piano that rose out of the floor; the recent tours keep the staging simple and let the stories carry it.
Recent tours have sold VIP packages named after his songs, but what they include and how fans rated them isn't documented. See the VIP notes in the [Airplane Mode Tour](#airplane-mode-tour-2027) section before paying for one.
