What Is It Like to See Dropkick Murphys Live?

St. Patrick's Day 2027 Tour

Sinead O'Connor's "The Foggy Dew" plays in the dark, a lone piper walks out, and then Ken Casey spends the night on the barricade while security passes crowd surfers over the rail like luggage.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
"The Foggy Dew" means go time

When the house lights drop and Sinead O'Connor's voice comes over the PA, the piper is next and the band is right behind him. Get to your spot before the recording ends.

  • 2
    Openers

Spiritual Cramp and Home Front are the direct support across the US and Canada. The 2026 run had The Aggrolites and Haywire, with Slugger on select dates.

  • 3
The hockey-game show is a solo set

The March 10, 2027 date in Springfield, Massachusetts follows a Springfield Thunderbirds game, needs a combination ticket for the game and the concert, and has no openers.

  • 4
The rail means Casey's microphone in your face

He works the barricade, the stage extensions and the forward mini-stage all night and holds the mic out to whoever is closest. Know "The Boys Are Back" and "Rose Tattoo" cold.

  • 5
Listen for a "Rose Tattoo" request

At Wilkes-Barre on March 17, 2025, the band asked that nobody surf to the front during the song so everyone could sing it, and the crowd went along with it.

  • 6
    The screens get political

The 2026 shows ran Trump and ICE footage on the video walls, so know what you are walking into.

  • 7
    Hometown dates come later

The [Boston](/cities/boston) St. Patrick's Day shows were not part of the 2027 announcement. Watch the band's own channels for them.

  • 8
    Merch with a cause

Look for the separate Claddagh Fund table, where signed shirts and vinyl go to the band's charity. More in [Merch](#merch).

What It's Actually Like

The Show Starts With a Recorded Ballad and a Lone Piper

The room goes black and the first voice you hear isn't anyone in the band. It's a recording of Sinead O'Connor singing "The Foggy Dew," which the Boston Globe's Marc Hirsh noted played at the March 14, 2024 House of Blues show "as is tradition." Then the piper walks out by himself. At the Salt Shed in Chicago on March 3, 2026, Campbell Webster played solo bagpipes in a dark room before anyone else touched an instrument. At the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on February 13, 2026, his walk-on piece was "Cadence to Arms." The floor compresses toward the stage during those pipes, so if you want space, move before the drums come in.

Ken Casey Will Put the Microphone in Your Face

Casey doesn't hold down a spot at center stage. He lives on the stage extensions and the barricade, mic pointed out at the crowd. At Port Chester he leapt onto a mini-stage to start the show and stayed at the front reaching into the room for the rest of it, according to NYS Music. At MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston on March 13, 2026 he jumped onto the extensions to sing with the front rows, and two nights later he crowd-surfed himself (WTBU). At the House of Blues on March 14, 2024 he stood on the barrier and held the mic out to a young fan. If you're on the rail, assume you'll be singing a line into his microphone, and know the words before you get there.

“This weekend makes us a better band because we have to play so many songs.”
— Ken Casey, MGM Music Hall at Fenway, March 13, 2026, via Boston.com

Bring Your Politics or Leave Them at Home, They're Coming Anyway

Casey talks between songs, and on recent tours the talk has teeth. On the 2026 run, "First Class Loser" played under a video montage of Donald Trump clips with "FCL" and "FDT" on the screens (WTBU, March 15, 2026). "Citizen I.C.E.," a rewrite of "Citizen C.I.A.," ran footage of ICE arrests behind the band at the March 13 Boston show (Boston.com). The speeches aren't only anger. At the March 16, 2025 MGM show he read a letter from a soldier who had brought the band a piece of shrapnel from Ukraine, then dedicated "You'll Never Walk Alone" to the people fighting there (Loudhailer). At the Salt Shed he asked the veterans in the room to raise their hands and thanked them. WTBU's reviewer found the Trump montage cathartic. If that sounds like a night you'd rather skip, take it seriously: this is not a band that keeps its views off the screens.

The Old Songs Win the Room

On setlist.fm, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" leads the band's most-played list at 1,076 logged performances, followed by "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya," "The State of Massachusetts," "Rose Tattoo" and "The Boys Are Back." Those five are close to guaranteed, and "Shipping Up to Boston" sat in the encore at the Salt Shed and both March 2026 Boston shows reviewers covered. At the March 14, 2024 House of Blues show, about two-thirds of the set came from the first four albums. The back half of a night is where things rotate. Comparing the Salt Shed set with the March 13 Boston set, 16 songs overlap and the rest swap out: Ewan MacColl's "School Days Over" and Eric Bogle's "The Green Fields of France" in Chicago, the Almanac Singers' "Which Side Are You On?" and the live debut of "Only the Strong" in Boston. The new material splits the room. Boston.com's reviewer felt the March 13 crowd wanted "Tessie" or "Kiss Me, I'm Sh-tfaced" more than the new songs.

Seven-Year-Olds and Fifty-Year-Old Punks on the Same Floor

Look around and you'll see a crowd that skews middle-aged and male, plus plenty of punk women and families with kids as young as seven or eight (WTBU, March 15, 2026). The Concert Chronicles' writer counted ages "from 7 to 87" in the line at Wilkes-Barre. Casey has pulled kids into the show: at Huntington in February 2025 he pulled a girl of about five onstage during "Rose Tattoo," and she was too starstruck to clap but gave him a fist bump (Metal Insider). Even the pit can be a family outing. A Footy Almanac contributor wrote about taking his son to a sold-out Forum Theatre show: the dad lasted about ten minutes in the pit ("It's sweaty, it's sticky, it's hot") and his son dove in for "Shipping Up to Boston." A first-timer from WTBU summed it up: "I entered a curious observer and walked out with respect for chaos."

St. Patrick's Day 2027 Tour (2027)

27 announced dates from February 5, 2027 in Albuquerque to March 11, 2027 in Portland, Maine, with the hometown Boston shows to be announced separately (mxdwn, September 29, 2026). Theaters, ballrooms and convention halls.

A Western and Canadian Swing Before the Northeast

The 2027 run starts in the Southwest and California (Albuquerque, Tempe, Del Mar, Anaheim, Sacramento), then spends most of February in Canada, with stops including Penticton, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, two nights at the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, Ottawa, two nights at the Capitole in Quebec City. It closes in the Northeast with Wilmington and the Springfield hockey-game show before Portland, Maine. If you're in Winnipeg or Quebec City, you get two nights to pick from.

Spiritual Cramp and Home Front Are Direct Support

Both bands play direct support across the US and Canada. The announcement doesn't say which act plays which date, so check your own show. Springfield is the exception: Dropkick Murphys play alone after the Thunderbirds game, in the MassMutual Convention Center Exhibition Hall next to the arena.

What the 2026 Run Tells You to Expect

The For The People...In The Pit tour set the template this one inherits. The stage had extensions and a forward mini-stage that Casey and Haywire's Austin Sparkman both used to get into the crowd (NYS Music; Grateful Web). Openers jumped into each other's sets: Casey sang "New England Forever" with Haywire at the Salt Shed and rewrote it on the spot as "Chicago Forever." Grateful Web's reviewer wrote that "this band gets out there and lifts them onto the stage," and NYS Music described each act at Port Chester "building on the prior's energy."

The Boston Week Is a Different Show

The hometown run is where the guest list and the tributes live. On March 15, 2026, "Red Bandana Night" honored Welles Crowther, the Boston College alum killed on 9/11: his mother tossed red bandanas into the crowd during "A Hero Among Many," and the Boston College marching band came out for the closer (WTBU). On March 13, Heather Fahey sang "The Dirty Glass" with Casey, and two retired 1990s Boston bands, The Vigilantes and Showcase Showdown, came back to open (Boston.com). The 2026 week also had a 2 p.m. family matinee with no openers and a meet and greet, where two kids under 13 got in free per adult ticket, with proceeds to the Claddagh Fund (Pollstar). Whether 2027 repeats that format won't be known until the Boston dates are announced.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a Celtic punk show where the frontman spends most of the night on the barricade and the floor never stops moving. The lights drop on a recording of "The Foggy Dew," a lone piper plays, and from then on Ken Casey holds the mic out to the front rows from the barricade. Bagpipes, accordion and banjo sit on top of the punk, and the old songs ("Rose Tattoo," "The State of Massachusetts") get the loudest singing.

The headline set runs about 1h 30m, with 22 to 24 songs on the 2026 tour. Reviewers have clocked the same length for years: the Boston Globe timed the 2011 Fenway Park set at 90 minutes, and NYS Music had the February 2026 Port Chester show at "over an hour and a half." With two or three openers, it's a long night.

Late in the evening, because there are usually two or three openers first. Setlist.fm's average start time for the band is about 3h 20m after doors. At Port Chester in February 2026, the first opener went on at 6:45 p.m.
