What Is It Like to See Alestorm Live?

UK and Ireland Tour 2027

A 12-foot yellow rubber duck nobody onstage will explain, a frontman in a kilt playing keytar, and a whole room sitting on a beer-soaked floor rowing a ship that isn't there.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
    Learn to row.

When "Nancy the Tavern Wench" kicks in, the pit stops and people sit down in lines and paddle. At [MTelus in Montreal](/cities/montreal) in 2024 the row pit stretched from near the barricade almost to the soundboard. Details in [Fan Culture](#fan-culture-and-traditions).

  • 2
Dress for a pirate party, not a reenactment.

Tricorn hats, eyepatches, inflatable cutlasses, parrot suits, rubber ducks worn as necklaces. The band itself skips the costumes; Christopher Bowes plays in a kilt.

  • 3
Openers on the January 2027 UK and Ireland dates

Battle Beast and Wizardthrone. Battle Beast are the Finnish heavy metal band fronted by Noora Louhimo, and Wizardthrone are Scottish.

  • 4
The duck is part of the show.

It inflates in front of you before the band walks on, and it sits center stage all night without a word of explanation.

  • 5
"Hangover" is the Taio Cruz song.

Yes, really. Watch who comes out for the rap; more in [What It's Actually Like](#what-its-actually-like).

  • 6
    Gloryhammer is Bowes's other band.

He founded it, Sozos Michael sings it, and when they share a bill they play in armor with a hammer that lights up.

  • 7
    Merch splits two ways.

Album-art shirts sit online at the label's US store; the band's own joke designs were sold out online in October 2026. See [Merch](#merch).

What It's Actually Like

A Giant Rubber Duck That Nobody Explains

You walk in and there it is: a yellow inflatable duck the height of two people, wedged between the keyboard riser and the drums. At the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow in March 2016 it stood 12 feet tall in front of a backdrop of the band's old "bananaduck" mascot (Sentinel Daily). At UEA in Norwich in December 2021 the crew inflated it in view of the crowd before the band came on, and "Anticipation grew as the duck filled up" (Scene Point Blank). It has worn an eyepatch (MTelus, 2019) and it goes to festivals too: Planet Rock saw the band "flanked by their trademark giant inflatable yellow duck" on Download's Apex Stage in 2022. Then the band mostly ignores it. At a sold-out Piratefest show at the O2 Forum Kentish Town Ghost Cult noted it was "never addressed or engaged with," and at the Gramercy Theatre in 2016 the band dedicated "Walk the Plank" to it, "not knowing why it was there in the first place" (My Global Mind).

"Keelhauled" First, "Rumpelkombo" Last

The bookends don't move. "Keelhauled" opened all 25 analyzed 2026 shows and all 89 in 2025, and it's the most-played song of their career at 894 performances (setlist.fm). The front rows treat it like a starting gun: at MTelus in 2019 people shoved each other and shouted the lyrics "like a bunch of drunk pirates" (Montreal Rocks). The other end of the night is just as fixed. "Rumpelkombo" closed 23 of 25 analyzed 2026 shows, usually after "Fucked With an Anchor," and "Shit Boat (No Fans)" ends the main set most nights (setlist.fm). "Fucked With an Anchor" was the closer before that, finishing every analyzed show in 2018, and at Nosturi in Helsinki in March 2019 the crowd flipped the bird through it (Tuonela Magazine). The middle of the set turns over with each album: the 2026 average carried "Banana," "Hyperion Omniriff" and "The Storm" from The Thunderfist Chronicles next to "Nancy the Tavern Wench," "Mexico" and "1741 (The Battle of Cartagena)."

“What was supposed to be a one-off joke turned into the whole theme of the band now.”
— Christopher Bowes on the duck, Dead Rhetoric

A Taio Cruz Cover With a Rotating Rapper

The pop cover you'll hear is not a joke slot, it's a pillar. Their version of Taio Cruz's "Hangover," on 2014's Sunset on the Golden Age, has 562 logged live performances, more than almost anything they wrote themselves (setlist.fm). The rap verse goes to whoever is around. In Helsinki in 2019 two guests came out, one rapping and one on acoustic guitar, and one poured three beers down his throat during "Drunken Sailor" first (Tuonela Magazine). In Southampton in 2021 it was "Phil from Australia aka the Beef Guy," who came back later in drag (Rock Regeneration). At MTelus in 2024 a crew member did it in a shark head (Montreal Rocks), and at The Rave in Milwaukee in September 2025 "MC Shark" sang, chased guitarist Máté "Bobo" Bodor around the stage and "chewed on his head a little bit" (The Concert Chronicles). At the Gramercy Theatre in 2016 the setup line was a crowd poll: "who woke up in an ocean of your own vomit?"

Bowes in a Kilt, Roasting Your City

Don't expect a pirate costume from the stage. Christopher Bowes sings and plays keytar in a kilt (tartan with a vest and sandals in Southampton in 2021, black and green at Rock City in 2024), and at Rock City Bobo played in bright green short shorts (Livewire). Bowes told The Inlander the band is "here to put on a rock-and-roll show," not dress up. Between songs it's drinking jokes and insults to the host. He chugged a Lapin Kulta after "Over the Seas" in Helsinki and called the city "Smellsinki" (Tuonela Magazine). At the Garage in Glasgow in 2012 he refused to down a Buckfast in one go because he was "far too skinny" and would die, then dove into the crowd at the end (Moshville). Echoes and Dust, at the O2 Ritz Manchester in 2018, called the banter "offbeat, sometimes verging on nonsensical," and that's about right.

Short Songs, Built for Shouting

Bowes calls Alestorm "#1, a live band" and says long, complicated songs "just fall flat live," so the set is built from short ones you can shout after one listen (Dead Rhetoric). You feel that from the floor. The choruses are a word or two ("Drink!", "Mexico!") and the room knows them before the band finishes the first verse; at Rock City in February 2024 "Drink" was the loudest singalong of the night (Livewire). The pits are rough and good-natured at once. Helsinki in 2019 had a wall of death and people picking each other up (Tuonela Magazine), and a Bandsintown attendee at the Knitting Factory in Boise in April 2024 wrote "The circle pits were great for all 3 bands." Another, at Metropolis in Fremantle in March 2025, summed up the mood: "The crowd showed up for a P.A.R.T.Y. and that was what was had!"

UK and Ireland Tour (2027)

Fifteen headline dates from the university Great Hall in Cardiff on January 14 to the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London on January 30, mostly O2 Academy rooms plus Newcastle's O2 City Hall, the O2 Ritz, UEA's LCR in Norwich, Dundee's LiveHouse, Ulster Hall in Belfast, the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin and Rock City in Nottingham (alestorm.net). It's the next stop after 2026's Thunderfisting Latin America run, the Mostly Canadian Tour in May and a summer of European festivals.

Battle Beast and Wizardthrone on the Bill

Finnish heavy metal band Battle Beast and Scottish metal band Wizardthrone support (Hot Press; UEA SU). That makes it a three-band night. Past UK runs paired Alestorm with folk-metal bands: at Rock City in February 2024 Heidevolk played 40 minutes and Korpiklaani an hour before the headliner (Livewire), and the reviewer counted them among "three bands I highly recommend to see live."

Doors at 7, Curfew at 11

Live Nation UK lists most of the O2 dates with 7pm doors and an 11pm curfew; Oxford runs 6:30pm to 10pm and Dublin opens doors at 6pm. With two support acts ahead of them, the curfew sets the length of the headline set. It has cut them short before: at Glasgow's Garage in 2012 Moshville said the band "could easily have played for an extra half hour" if the venue hadn't shut early.

The 2026 Setlist as a Preview

No 2027 setlist exists yet, but the 2026 shows are the best guide. The average ran "Keelhauled," "Killed to Death by Piracy," "The Sunk'n Norwegian," "Zombies Ate My Pirate Ship," "Mexico," "Under Blackened Banners," "Banana," "Hangover," "Hyperion Omniriff," "Nancy the Tavern Wench," "Alestorm," "1741 (The Battle of Cartagena)," "The Storm," "P.A.R.T.Y.," "Shit Boat (No Fans)" and "Drink," with an encore of "Fucked With an Anchor," "Wooden Leg!" and "Rumpelkombo" (setlist.fm). Seven of 25 analyzed 2026 shows skipped the encore break and played straight through.

What's Exclusive

Nothing tour-dated or city-specific turned up in any source. Instead the catalog splits across two stores. The band's own store carries the joke designs: "Your Pirate Ship Can Eat a Bag of Dicks," "We Are Here To Drink Your Beer," "Pirate Metal Drinking Crew," "Fucked With An Anchor," plus Gloryhammer shirts and a "Terrorsquid" shape patch. Napalm Records' US store carries the album-art designs ("Rum," "Seventh Rum," "Octopus," "Curse Of The Crystal Coconut"), though its "Live In Tilburg" tee was sold out.

The Strategy

If you want an album-art shirt, you can skip the queue: those were in stock online in October 2026. If you want one of the band's own designs, buy it at the show, because every item on the band's store was listed sold out. At Stage AE in March 2024 the merch queue ran across the general admission floor (TPRS).

Alestorm · merch

Is the merch at a Alestorm show worth queueing for?

Not what it costs. The price card answers that. This is whether the queue is optional, which has different inputs.

Can you get it later?
Album designs, yes
When do you queue?

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a drinking-song party built on short, one-word choruses like "Drink!" and "Mexico!", with a frontman in a kilt on keytar and a pit that runs all night. Bowes calls the band "#1, a live band," and the songs are written to be shouted back.

About 1h 30m for the headline set, which was the length at MTelus in 2019 (Montreal Rocks). That works out to 19 to 20 songs on recent tours.

Mostly the hits, plus three or four songs from the newest album; the full pattern is in [What It's Actually Like](#what-its-actually-like). The surprises tend to be local covers.
