What Is It Like to See a Concert at The Star Theatre?

Singapore, SingaporeTheater5,000 capacity

A 5,000-seat horseshoe stacked on top of a shopping mall, where the priciest seats at some shows are wing boxes that can't see the nearest screen, and the best value hangs over the back of the Stalls.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
    Budget time for the climb

Circle 2 is three or four escalator rides above the mall and the lifts are staff only, so a "be seated 15 minutes early" request means leaving the foyer well before that (see [What It's Actually Like](#what-its-actually-like)).

  • 2
    Take Buona Vista MRT

Use Exit A or C and the sheltered walkway, and you're at The Star in about five minutes (more in [Getting There](#getting-there)).

  • 3
Lens cameras go to the cloakroom

Cameras with detachable lenses have to be checked at the free cloakroom in the Level 5 Grand Foyer. Photography inside the auditorium is banned unless the organiser says otherwise, and phone rules change show to show, so read your event page.

  • 4
    Use that cloakroom

It takes coats and bulky items free of charge, and perishables are only held for 24 hours. The venue publishes no bag-size limit, but Raffles Press's 2025 guide notes bags are checked before you go in.

  • 5
    Drinks stay in the foyer

Outside food and drink aren't allowed in, and anything you buy at the theatre bars has to be finished in the foyer, not at your seat.

  • 6
    Every head needs a ticket

Anyone aged 1 and up needs their own ticket, infants in arms aren't admitted unless the show says so, and some shows set a higher minimum age. Free booster seats go first come, first served from an hour before start, and you're welcome to bring your own.

  • 7
    Eat downstairs first

The Star Vista mall below has the food, but most of its kitchens close by 9 or 10pm. Warm Up Cafe on Level 2 is the one that stays open late.

What It's Actually Like

You Ride Up Through a Mall to Reach Your Seat

The theatre doesn't have a street-level front door in the usual sense. You walk in through The Star Vista mall, ride up to the Grand Foyer on Level 5, and keep going: the Stalls are on Levels 6 and 7, Circle 1 on 8 and 9, and Circle 2 on 9 and 10. Lifts to Level 5 and above are restricted to authorised personnel, so unless an usher takes you up, it's escalators. A 2022 Tripadvisor reviewer counted "3 or 4" of them to reach the upper seats. Another, in 2019, counted only two escalators running up and saw a 9:30pm show start at 10:30pm while the crowd was still being seated. That's a single report from one night, but the climb itself is real, and it's longest for Circle 2.

The Sound Is the Least of Your Worries

The room runs delay speakers to even out the mix across the tiers, and Raffles Press's 2025 seat-by-seat review left sound out of its scoring for that reason: it didn't separate one seat from another. Tripadvisor reviewers have said the same thing for years ("No echo," 2017; "Love the sound system," 2025). One 2017 reviewer had heard Circle 2 sounded poor and found the opposite: "I can clearly hear everything!" The one dissent is about the act, not the room. A 2019 reviewer warned that a mix pushed too loud swamps everything else.

“The climb up to the box seats may cause one to feel a little lightheaded.”
— Raffles Press seat-by-seat review, February 2025

Nobody Stays Down at the Pop Shows

It's a fully seated theatre with no standing pen, and that rarely matters once the band walks on. At OneRepublic in 2018, a concert blogger wrote that about 4,000 people "refused to sit down nor slow down," and noted the rows leave room to stand. Seoulbeats called DAY6's 2019 night "a seated performing gallery" and then described a crowd on its feet from the first song, lightsticks up. If you want to sit through a K-pop or pop show, you'll be watching the back of the row in front.

Sit Where Your Ticket Says

On one November 2025 night, a Tripadvisor reviewer watched staff check tickets repeatedly through the opening songs because people, some of them older guests, were in the wrong seats. The same reviewer queued 20 minutes for a seat relocation and didn't love the replacement view. It's one report, but it's a good reason to have your seat number handy.

The Seats Themselves Split People

Reviews of the chairs disagree more than anything else here. Two 2019 Tripadvisor reviewers called them comfortable. A 2022 reviewer called them uncomfortable, and a September 2025 one went further: "extremely uncomfortable, painful on the butt." The newer reviews lean negative. Same 2022 reviewer noted there's no Wi-Fi for attendees.

Section-by-Section Guide

How the Room Is Laid Out

It's a traditional horseshoe: Stalls on the floor (about 1,900 seats), Circle 1 above the back half of the Stalls (Stalls plus Circle 1 is 3,700), Circle 2 on top, and boxes at the stage wings. The last row of Circle 2 is 56 metres from the stage, per the venue; a student seat review estimated about 59, but 56 is the official figure. Seat labels run letter-letter-number, so BV06 is in the Stalls, NA01 is in Circle 1 and UA05 is in Circle 2. Promoters name and price the tiers differently for every show. Mahalini's October 2026 date ran from S$58 for Bronze (restricted view) up to S$198 for VIP and the boxes, while NMIXX's June 2026 show ran five tiers from S$178 to S$308 before fees. Check your show's map before you assume what "Platinum" means.

Front Stalls (the VIP Block)

The front centre block is about 11 rows deep, so there aren't many heads between you and the stage. The front rows crane the neck up, and you're close enough to catch a handshake and the full spray of smoke and confetti. Raffles Press scored it top for proximity and bottom for price, comparing the ticket to roughly 92 packets of chicken rice. At K-pop shows VIP usually bundles soundcheck access and early merch, which means an earlier reporting time than the showtime on your ticket.

Mid and Rear Stalls

This is where the same price buys very different nights. The front Stalls rise gradually and the rear Stalls sit on a raised platform, so the people in front don't block you. But seats out by the side walls need a turned neck, and the last rows lose the top of the stage under the Circle 1 overhang. You usually can't pick your exact seat when you buy. Raffles Press put it bluntly: "Getting Cat 2 seats are a gamble as there are vastly different views offered for the same price." If you're buying mid-price Stalls, hope for the centre of the raised platform.

Box A and Box C

The boxes sit at the stage wings, eight seats a side, reached only by stairs, so they're not suitable for wheelchair users. You're very close and very visible to the rest of the room. The catch is the angle: you're looking across the stage, not at it. You see one side of the show, and the nearest screen is hidden from you. On recent listings the boxes sell at the top tier alongside VIP (S$198 at Mahalini in 2026). Only buy them if proximity matters more than seeing the whole production, and check which side of the stage your artist tends to work.

Circle 1 (Levels 8 and 9)

This is the tier to aim for. Circle 1 hangs over the back half of the Stalls, so it's closer than the seating map makes it look, and you see the full stage without craning. Sections N and G give you a taste of box-seat proximity from a straight-on angle, though the extreme edge seats there can have the stage edges clipped by the boxes. A venue tour guide told Raffles Press his own favourite seat in the house is the front row of Circle 1, dead centre. Raffles Press scored mid-price Circle 1 equal best overall, and on the map it reviewed it was the second-cheapest category. One caution: restricted-view seats in Circle 1 can lose more of the screen to the roof than restricted seats in Circle 2 do.

Circle 2 (Levels 9 and 10)

These are the cheapest unrestricted seats, and they're better than the words "top tier" suggest. Some front rows of Circle 2 actually sit closer to the stage than the furthest rows of Circle 1. The trade-offs are specific. The rear rows show more ceiling. Side seats can have screen effects blocked by speakers. In Circle 2, sections V and P lose part of the view to the box seats themselves. A Yiruma concertgoer in the top tier still described the sound as "so close and so live," so distance costs you detail, not audio.

Restricted View

It's a real ticket category here, sold as Restricted View or Bronze (S$58 at Mahalini in 2026). The obstruction comes from speakers, the boxes or the overhang, and in most of these seats the stage itself stays visible. Raffles Press made the point that the label scares buyers off, so you often get more choice. For a show where you care more about the music than the screens, it's the best-value ticket in the building.

Picking a Tier: The Short Version

Circle 1 centre, especially the front row and sections N and G, is the best all-round buy. Front Circle 2 centre is the best cheap ticket. Mid-price Stalls is the gamble, the boxes are proximity at the expense of the view, and Restricted View is underrated. For the cheaper tiers, the littlebigreddot ticket guide's 2026 advice holds up: take a central seat over a few rows closer at a sharp side angle.

Accessibility Seating

The venue says there's wheelchair-accessible seating on every tier. Most of the auditorium is reached by steps, though, and lift access to the theatre is limited and run by ushers, so event listings tell wheelchair users to call the SISTIC hotline (+65 6348 5555) before booking rather than buying online. You can also email info@thestar.sg ahead of the day. Accessible parking is on B2, B3 and B4 next to Lift Lobbies A and B, and the accessible toilets are in the theatre foyers. The boxes are stairs only. We didn't find fan reports on the view from the wheelchair positions, so ask about sightlines when you book.

Getting There

Transit

Buona Vista MRT is the way in. It's on both the East West Line (EW21) and the Circle Line (CC22). Take Exit A or C and follow the sheltered walkway, about five minutes to The Star. Tripadvisor reviewers from 2016 to 2022 and a 2018 concert blogger all make the same point: the station is basically next door, and the train beats driving. one-north on the Circle Line is one stop away as a fallback. The Buona Vista bus interchange is right there too.

Driving + Parking

The Star Vista Car Park runs from B2 to B4 with more than 800 lots, entered from Vista Exchange Green or Rochester Drive. Even so, the venue's own event listings tell concertgoers to take public transport and name six overflow car parks: Rochester Mall, Ministry of Education, Fusionopolis, Biopolis at One-North, NTU Alumni Club and The Metropolis. The venue doesn't publish rates, so check The Star Vista's own site before you drive.

Rideshare

There's drop-off at the same two vehicle entrances, Vista Exchange Green or Rochester Drive, according to a 2026 concert-guide blog.

Getting Out

Buona Vista MRT is the fastest exit: retrace the sheltered walkway and you're on the platform in about five minutes. Reports on taxis conflict. A 2016 Tripadvisor reviewer found plenty at the stand after a show, while a 2019 reviewer found them scarce after a night show and booked Grab or Gojek instead.

Food, Drink, and Merch

Worth Getting

The food is downstairs in The Star Vista, not in the theatre. From a March 2026 food guide: Warm Up Cafe (Thai, Level 2) does pad thai wrapped in egg for about S$13 and creamy crab with rice for about S$14, and it's open until 3am, which makes it the only real post-show meal in the building. Chen's Mapo Tofu (Level 2) has sets from about S$16 until 9:30pm, and Gyushi (B1) does rice bowls from about S$8 to S$20 until 9pm (8pm on Sundays). A 2022 Tripadvisor reviewer liked having lots of outlets downstairs right by the MRT.

The Strategy

There are bars in the theatre foyers, but whatever you buy there has to be drunk in the foyers. It can't go into the auditorium. So if you want a drink, have it in the foyer before you head in, not in your seat. Most mall kitchens close by 9 or 10pm, so eat before the show unless you're happy with Thai at Warm Up Cafe.

Merch

Merch is run by the promoter, not the venue, and there's no venue-branded merch we could find. At K-pop shows VIP packages often include early merch access, according to a 2026 ticket guide, so the merch line can be running before general doors.

Venue History

The Star Theatre opened on 1 November 2012 with a David Foster concert. It's the main room of The Star Performing Arts Centre, which takes up Levels 3 to 11 of The Star, a 15-storey complex in one-north designed by Andrew Bromberg of Aedas, with The Star Vista mall underneath. It cost about S$500 million and was billed as the country's first 5,000-seat performing arts theatre.

It's owned by Rock Productions, the business arm of New Creation Church, which holds its Sunday services in the theatre. In November 2019 Rock Productions also bought The Star Vista mall from CapitaLand for S$296 million.

On the concert side, it's become the room Singapore uses for acts too big for the Esplanade and not quite ready for the Singapore Indoor Stadium. BTS played here in 2014. A year later Ed Sheeran, Elton John and the Backstreet Boys all came through. Demand can outrun the room: Siti Nurhaliza's June 2024 date sold out in under 24 hours, and fans asked why she hadn't booked a stadium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not a seat that loses the whole stage, but plenty that lose pieces of it. The boxes, the rearmost Stalls rows and a couple of Circle 2 sections are the ones to know about before you buy (see the [Section-by-Section Guide](#section-by-section-guide)). A 2016 Tripadvisor reviewer's verdict was "there are no bad seats in this hall," and that's fair if you only care about the stage itself.

Earlier than the ticket suggests. Event pages ask you to be seated 15 minutes before start, and in this building getting from the mall to your tier takes longer than you'd think (see [What to Know Before You Go](#what-to-know-before-you-go)). A 2026 concert-guide blog also says the foyers fill quickly once doors open.

Tickets, outside food and cameras. Everyone 1 and over needs a ticket, outside food and drink aren't allowed, and detachable-lens cameras have to be left at the Level 5 cloakroom. The venue doesn't publish a bag-size limit, and Raffles Press's 2025 guide notes bags are checked before you go in. One 2025 reviewer also saw ushers re-checking seat numbers during the opening songs.
