The Falsetto Is Real, and He Hands It to You

The first thing that catches out newcomers is that Conor Mason sings all of it live, and the falsetto is not a studio effect. On "Excuse Me" he goes up into a room-filling howl on the chorus, the moment Radio X once described as "Muse-evoking epicness" at the O2 Forum Kentish Town. The Muse comparison is not lazy shorthand, Mason has openly taken advice from Matt Bellamy, and the two bands toured together for exactly this reason. The tell that the voice is genuine is what he does with it: he stops singing, steps off the mic, and lets a few thousand people take a note most of them cannot actually reach. Reviewers on the Dead Club City run kept landing on the same phrase, "some serious pipes and his falsetto is breath-taking," and one caught him doing it with a cold and called the vocals "absolutely insane" (The Rockpit, 2024).

One Lineup Since 2012, and It Shows

Nothing But Thieves have had the exact same five members since forming in Southend-on-Sea in 2012: Conor Mason on vocals and guitar, Joe Langridge-Brown and Dominic Craik on guitars, Philip Blake on bass (Craik's cousin), and James Price on drums. Fourteen years without a single change shows up on stage as a specific kind of tightness. At the Rooftop at Pier 17 in October 2024, the reviewer put it directly: they have "created one of the most tight, together bands to date," and the live sound, "despite being harder, was very practiced" (All Music Magazine). A Nothing But Thieves set is built on deliberate contrast. They alternate a heavy song with a quiet one on purpose, so the floor is jumping through "Unperson" and then goes silent for "Impossible." At the O2 Apollo in November 2023, the band cleared the stage for a short instrumental stretch without Mason, who came back alone for a hushed "Green Eyes :: Siena" that "created a calm atmosphere that contrasted with the rest of the gig" (The Mancunion). That mid-set pivot, from a mosh to a held breath and back, is the thing long-time fans name when you ask what makes this band different from any other loud rock act.

"Overcome" Ends It, "Amsterdam" Explodes It

Across the most recent world tour, the show closed on "Overcome" 142 times out of 172 logged setlists, which makes it the reliable last word of the night (setlist.fm). "Amsterdam" is the other anchor, landing at the end of the main set or in the encore, and it is the one where the entire room screams the chorus back. Fans treat "Amsterdam," "Impossible" and "Overcome" as the three everyone knows, and the encore usually stacks two of them. The encore itself is close to a guarantee: 109 of those 172 shows played one, and the band came back nearly every night.

The Pixies Cover You Didn't Expect

Somewhere in the back half, the band drops a Pixies cover of "Where Is My Mind?" (the one from Fight Club).
