What Is It Like to See Arkayla Live?
Four Mancunians who walk on through their own crowd to a 1989 hip-hop record, then play sets laced with songs that aren't out yet, which the room somehow already knows the words to.
What to Know Before You Go
- 1Turn around when "Know How" starts.
Young MC's track is the walk-on, and the band push through the audience to reach the stage instead of appearing from the wings.
- 2Learn "Run Kid" and "Waste Of Time" first.
They're the two biggest singalongs, and the "Run Kid" pit is the most physical part of the night.
- 3Expect songs you can't have heard.
At least two unreleased songs sit in every recent headline set, and the regulars will already be singing them.
- 4Stand back on "Run Kid" and "Doctor" if you just want to watch.
One opens a pit, the other puts people up on shoulders.
- 5Don't talk through "Ella Malone."
It's played acoustic, it's the oldest song they have (Cal wrote it at 15), and the room sways through it.
- 6Listen for the kayaker story.
Before "Doba" one of them usually explains Aleksander Doba, the Polish explorer who crossed the Atlantic by kayak in his seventies.
- 7Catch the openers.
The autumn 2026 UK run had The North and Cherryholt on the bill, and the May 2026 dates rotated a different support act most nights, from Garage Flower to Rollups.

What It's Actually Like
Part of the set isn't out yet, and the front rows know it anyway
Arkayla road-test new songs constantly, and their crowd learns them before Spotify does. At The Sunflower Lounge on the last night of the May 2026 tour, Taped Magazine watched fans sing the words to tracks that hadn't been released, and "Vivian" was already being called a fan favourite at the Oporto in Leeds and at The Croft months before it came out. The pattern holds: the sold-out Academy 2 hometown show in December 2025 carried three unreleased songs, and the September 2026 hometown headline carried three more ("The Middle," "No Man's Land," "Care To Explain"), per setlist.fm. If you only know the EPs, you'll spend a few songs catching up with the people around you.
The floor bounces on "Falling Down," then goes still for "Ella Malone"
The set has a built-in gear change. On the second night of the May 2026 tour, Taped noted the concrete floor didn't stop anyone bouncing to "Falling Down," and that "the entire front section of the crowd were bumping off of each other while singing along." Then the guitars go acoustic for "Ella Malone," which Cal Blakebrough told the Leeds crowd he wrote at 15. The Oporto swayed through it with hands up. The harmonies carry this stretch: back in November 2023, opening for Spangled at a Manchester club show, the Eventhestars gig blog said the band were "at their best" when the bassist and guitarist stacked vocals on "No Man's Land" and "Ella Malone."
“Doctor and Waste of Time sound fresh despite being built on a sound born before this young band were.”
A guitarist's cover and a story about a Polish kayaker
Two non-hits moments recur. Guitarist Finley Rubens leads Wreckless Eric's 1978 "Take the Cash," which setlist.fm logs 39 times, their ninth most-played song and the one fixed cover. And "Doba" is about Aleksander Doba, the Polish explorer who paddled across the Atlantic in his seventies, so somebody usually explains it first. At Leeds, Cal introduced it as a song about "a Polish kayaker" and the room leaned in; at The Sunflower Lounge it was Fin, whose offhand version of the story briefly derailed the whole room. Fin is the one who found Doba's story, reading late one night.
Cal's rasp sells a sound older than the band
Reviewers keep circling the same two things. Taped at The Croft heard "a catchy vintage sound" with a "raspy voice" up front, and Taped at The Sunflower Lounge said that rasp is the band's whole identity. At The Barrier, catching their Doves support slot in December 2025, heard "swagger and Northern lethargy dripping from the four-piece." The band cite The Smiths, The La's and The Stone Roses, and you can hear all three in the jangle of "Fortune Teller."
"Doctor" is when people go up on shoulders
The closest thing to a fixed climax is "Doctor." It closed every reviewed night of the May 2026 headline tour and now ends the main set before the encore. On the May tour's second night, Taped wrote that "fans were climbing upon each other's shoulders, arms were raised high and voices were certainly heard" through it. At the Oporto the band stretched it into a long outro and introduced each member over the top, which is your cue that the night is nearly done.
Autumn 2026 UK & Europe Headline Tour (2026)
Their biggest headline run so far, reported sold out by Ones to Watch, ran through UK clubs from late September into October 2026 and then into the Netherlands and France, including two sets at Rotterdam's Left of the Dial festival on 22 October. It took the band to Hull, Norwich, Brighton and Sunderland, among others, for the first time.
The hometown room got bigger
The peak was the 1,500-capacity O2 Ritz in Manchester on 26 September, a venue the band told Ones to Watch they'd been going to since they were kids, and one Taped had flagged back in May as their "biggest headline show" yet. Their previous hometown headline was the 900-capacity Academy 2. Per setlist.fm, doors were at 7 PM, the two supports played at 7:30 and 8:15, and Arkayla came on at 9:15.
The set got flipped
This tour turns the May 2026 shape inside out. "Doba" now opens instead of "Lost In A Valentine," and "Run Kid" ends the night after "Waste Of Time," in an encore that started at the Ritz with The Who's "My Generation." For that one, Reuben from Cherryholt and Billy from The North came back on stage. The band told Ones to Watch they were rehearsing new songs and "tricks" for this run because "we want to make sure that each gig is a properly memorable experience for everyone that comes down."
Openers and what comes next
The North and Cherryholt supported on the UK leg, with Raynor added at Clwb Ifor Bach in Wales. Once the headline dates wrap, the band go straight into arena support slots: Blossoms across Ireland and the UK in November and December 2026, on a bill that also includes The Royston Club, then Two Door Cinema Club on their Tourist History anniversary arena tour in January 2027. A May 2027 UK club and theatre headline run has already been announced.

Merch
Merch is the one area where nothing solid has surfaced yet. No official web store, price list, tour-exclusive item or fan verdict on quality turned up in any review or interview of the 2026 shows. The only documented note comes from The Attic, the Scottish date of the May 2026 tour, where Taped saw "lots of the crowd stayed behind for merch and drinks" once the set ended.

Autumn 2026 UK & Europe Headline Tour
Their biggest run so far, sold out, peaking at the hometown O2 Ritz with "Doba" as the new opener and "Run Kid" as the new closer.
Debut UK Headline Tour
Their first headline tour, sold out.
Supports and hometown breakthrough
A sold-out 900-capacity Academy 2 hometown headline in December 2025 ended on Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody." Around it came supports for Doves, The Sherlocks and The Royston Club in Manchester, and a February 2026 European run opening for Blossoms with tight eight-song sets in rooms like Élysée Montmartre.
Early Manchester club years
Formed in 2023, they opened for Spangled and The Assist in November 2023, starting with "Calling Time," then their only single, which the reviewer called "a brave move but a sign of their confidence." Support slots with The Lathums and Seb Lowe and their own Manchester club headlines followed.
Frequently Asked Questions
It's a young, packed, singalong club show from a Manchester guitar band who sound like they grew up on The La's and The Stone Roses. Cal Blakebrough's rasp sits up front, the guitarist and bassist stack harmonies behind him, and the night finishes with the room bouncing to "Waste Of Time" and "Run Kid." One Taped Magazine reviewer wrote that "it's impossible to leave one of their gigs feeling anything but euphoric."
A headline set runs 1h 3m to 1h 15m, per setlist.fm data from the autumn 2026 tour, with 16 to 17 songs including a three-song encore. Festival sets are shorter.
Plan on Arkayla starting 1h 25m to 2h 15m after doors, depending on how many supports are on the bill. At The Attic in May 2026 they opened at 8:25 PM after 7 PM doors and one support; at the hometown show with two supports it was 9:15 PM.
Yes, and the live reputation is moving faster than the records. Cal Blakebrough's raspy voice holds up in small rooms, the harmonies from the guitarist and bassist are the part reviewers single out, and the band are tight enough that they were booked as arena support for Blossoms and Two Door Cinema Club before they'd headlined anything bigger than their hometown Ritz.
If you like jangly, harmony-heavy Manchester guitar music, yes, and the window for seeing them in a sweaty club is closing. Taped's reviewer at The Attic said that small-room show "might be the last time you catch them playing in such a small setting," and the arena supports start in late 2026.
"Waste Of Time" is the biggest singalong (fans sing it like it's their own story, per Atwood Magazine), "Run Kid" is the newest single and drew the biggest reaction at The Sunflower Lounge, and "Doctor" is the long-outro finale of the main set. "Lost In A Valentine" is their most-played song on setlist.fm, with "Falling Down" a close second.
The rooms are bigger and the set is flipped. The May 2026 debut headline tour opened on "Lost In A Valentine" and ended on "Doctor" in clubs like The Sunflower Lounge; the autumn run opens on "Doba," ends on "Run Kid," adds an encore, and peaked at the hometown Ritz.
One regularly and a couple for special nights. Wreckless Eric's "Take the Cash" is a regular in recent headline sets, with Fin out front; The Who's "My Generation" turned up in the autumn 2026 encore with the support bands on stage, and Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" closed the December 2025 hometown show.
