What Is It Like to See Amon Amarth Live?
A thousand people sit down on a beer-soaked floor and row an invisible longship, Johan Hegg raises a drinking horn at them, and the night ends with him swinging a hammer at a giant serpent.
What to Know Before You Go
- 1Sit down when the floor does.
During "Put Your Back Into the Oar" the whole floor drops and rows. Stay standing in the middle and you're the only mast on the ship.
- 2"Run to the Hills" is your warning.
[Iron Maiden](/artists/iron-maiden)'s song over the PA has been the walk-on cue for years. When it plays, the rune curtain is about to fall.
- 3Bring a horn if your venue allows it.
Hegg keeps a drinking horn on stage and calls the room to raise theirs during "Raise Your Horns." Plenty of people bring real ones.
- 4Helmets and war paint are normal.
Nobody will look twice at a horned helmet in this crowd. A [Boston](/cities/boston) reviewer in 2026 counted "many" in the audience.
- 5"First Kill" is where the pit opens.
Hegg also calls circle pits from the stage, so the edges move fast.
- 6The last song comes with a fight.
"Twilight of the Thunder God" closes the night, and Hegg takes a hammer to a serpent or dragon while the band plays.
- 72026 openers
Soilwork, then Orbit Culture, on every Allfather Awakens date. It's an all-Swedish bill.
- 8Know a few new songs.
*The Allfather Awakens* came out October 2, 2026, and its songs carry a big chunk of the current set.

What It's Actually Like
You Will Sit on the Floor and Row a Viking Ship
This is the one everyone tells you about, and it's real. Partway through "Put Your Back Into the Oar," the mosh pit stops, people drop to the floor in lines, and the whole room pulls invisible oars in time. At the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff (now Utilita Arena Cardiff) in September 2022, Moshville watched fans row "in pairs or small groups," which looked ridiculous and worked anyway. At History in Toronto that December, "the whole floor section sat down" halfway through the song, and the reviewer said rowing should be "mandatory" for ticket holders. At MGM Music Hall in Boston in April 2026 the floor knelt and chanted "Row!" Before the song existed, fans found their own moment: at MTELUS in Montreal in October 2019 about a thousand people sat on a "beer- and sweat-covered floor" and rowed through the guitar solo in "Raise Your Horns." Mud doesn't stop it either. At Wacken in 2024 fans dropped into it, though not everyone wanted to.
Raise Your Horns Means Actual Horns
"Raise Your Horns" isn't a metaphor at these shows. Hegg keeps a drinking horn within reach and toasts the room, and at Cardiff in 2022 the crowd "did so enthusiastically," filling the air with horns. At O2 Academy Birmingham in 2019 fans were waving their own horns all night. At Jones Beach Theater on July 26, 2025, days after Ozzy Osbourne died, the band dedicated "Raise Your Horns" to him and Hegg drained a beer from a Viking horn in his honour while the amphitheatre held theirs up. If you've got a horn at home, this is the one gig where it makes sense.
“Imagine that the mosh pit stops, and everybody sits down and pretends they're rowing.”
The Stage Is a Theatre Set, Not a Video Wall
You're watching a Viking play with a death metal band in it. The drummer sits inside a giant horned helmet whose eyes glow, show fire, or turn into screens of storms and longships. Stone-looking Viking statues stand either side and get swapped mid-set for inflatable dragon-boat prows, as they did at Oberhausen in September 2022. Costumed warriors fight on raised platforms with swords and shields; at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles in December 2022 they sent "chunks of wood flying." In Boston in 2026 a giant animatronic head and an inflatable dragon joined in. One reviewer called it "a medieval circus" and meant it as praise.
Fire Depends on the Size of the Room
In arenas and on festival main stages the heat hits your face from the first song. At OVO Arena Wembley in September 2022, Hardbeat had "jets of flame" seconds into the opener and sparks or fire in almost every song, and the room turned into a "massive sweat box." Oberhausen had six fire fountains angled toward the crowd. In smaller rooms, the fire stays home: at O2 Academy Birmingham in 2019 there was no pyro at all because the venue was "too small for their massive flame throwers to be safe," so they used smoke instead. If the full show matters to you, pick the bigger venue on the routing.
Hegg Fights the Serpent at the End
The closer is a staged battle. During "Twilight of the Thunder God," Hegg goes after a serpent or dragon with Thor's hammer while the band keeps playing. At Oberhausen in 2022 he struck a pedestal to set off flames and smoke, then hit the dragon head. At Wembley he ended the night "fighting a gigantic inflatable snake." At GLC Live in Grand Rapids in May 2024 he "clobbered the sea serpent with a large plastic Mjolnir." Local Spins described him as "grinning, affable," and that's the tone of the night: big growls, warm words, a host who tells you to "become Vikings" rather than a frontman who gives speeches.
The Allfather Awakens Tour (2026)
Twenty-eight UK and European dates from October 9 to November 15, 2026, opening at the O2 Apollo Manchester and the Eventim Apollo in London and closing at Sala Tejo in Lisbon. The middle of the run is arenas: Zénith Paris, Festhalle Frankfurt, the Velodrom in Berlin, and Scandinavium in Gothenburg, which Göteborg & Co lists as the band's first-ever show in that 14,000-capacity room. It's their first headline tour behind The Allfather Awakens, the 13th album, released October 2.
A Longer Set Than You've Seen Before
The announcement promised "an extended headline set," and the first two nights delivered: London ran a full 1h 45m, on stage at the advertised time, after an hour-long club warm-up at Zeche Carl in Essen on October 6. That's a big jump from the nine-song support slots of the 2025 Pantera dates. The extra room goes to rarities: "For Victory or Death" is back for the first time since 2015 and "Free Will Sacrifice" for the first time since 2023, per setlist.fm.
New Material, Including an Acoustic One
The set opens with "Gjallarhorn" and threads in "The Allfather Awakes," "We Rule the Waves," "Eight Legs of Thunder" and "Upphaf." That last one is the curveball: their first-ever acoustic song, debuted live in Manchester on October 9. It sits right before "Guardians of Asgaard," so the quiet moment is followed by one of the loudest. For "Saxons and Vikings," Biff Byford of Saxon appears on the video screen rather than in person.
The Staging Is New and Mostly Unreviewed
The press release promised "an all-new theatrical stage production," and as of October 12, 2026 no review has described it in detail. Fan footage from the UK nights is the best preview. What's documented is the running order: in London, doors at 5:30 PM, Soilwork at 6:30 PM, Orbit Culture at 7:30 PM, then the headliner. Nobody has posted a verdict on the openers yet.

What's Exclusive
The new album's North America exclusive "Golden Hall" vinyl and its bundles with the album zip hoodie, long sleeve and tee all sold out on the band's US store. The album designs themselves (The Allfather Awakens, Gjallarhorn, Eight Legs, Upphaf) are still on the official store, so you can get those later. VIP buyers on the 2025 Pantera dates got signed comic books, a "soft Heidrun towel" and a sling bag. No city-specific posters have been documented.
The Strategy
VIP on the 2025 Pantera dates let you shop the stand before the main crowd arrived. For the 2026 run, the presale code ALLFATHER opened on November 25, 2025, three days ahead of general sale.
Quality Verdict
One VIP buyer at SPAC in September 2025 called them "the best shirts and hoodies I've seen at a show." That's a single voice, and no sizing or durability reports turned up beyond it.

A song written for the row
The fan ritual got a fixed cue: floors sit down for Put Your Back Into the Oar, from Toronto 2022 to Boston 2026, where Montreal in 2019 had rowed during a Raise Your Horns solo.
2019
The drummer moves into a helmet
Wallgren's kit sat in a horned helmet riser whose eyes later showed visuals for each song, and the helmet was still the centrepiece on the 2026 North American dates.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's a death metal show staged like Viking theatre, and the crowd takes part. You get sword-fighting reenactors, a drummer in a giant helmet, flames in the bigger rooms, a floor that sits down to row, and a closing fight between Johan Hegg and a serpent. Reviewers keep landing on the word fun rather than brutal.
On The Allfather Awakens Tour the headline set runs 1h 45m. Shorter sets in recent years came from co-headline and support slots, not headline nights.
Whatever you'd wear to a metal show, plus a horned helmet or war paint if you want to blend in. Viking caps, face paint and drinking horns have shown up in the crowd from 2017 to 2026, and nobody treats them as a costume party.
Mostly the established run of anthems, with a few rarities rotated in per tour. "The Pursuit of Vikings," "Twilight of the Thunder God" and "Guardians of Asgaard" are each past 900 plays on setlist.fm. The 2026 set adds "For Victory or Death," unplayed since 2015, but songs from the 1990s albums are rare.
Yes, and reviewers who don't love the music still say so. New England Sounds called them the highlight that "justified the whole bill" in Boston in 2026, and Metal Hammer left their Wacken 2024 headline calling them "one of metal's top tier players." The only complaint we found came from Cardiff in 2022, where a reviewer felt some songs blended together.
At 8:45 PM on the first UK dates of 2026, after two support acts, and right on schedule in London. Manchester started five minutes late.
Yes, especially in an arena. The production scales with the room, so the full version with fire, statues and the serpent is a bigger night than a club show without pyro. Where else will you sit on a sticky floor rowing with a thousand strangers?
"Put Your Back Into the Oar" for the row, "First Kill" for the pit, "Raise Your Horns" for the toast, and "Twilight of the Thunder God" for the serpent fight. "Guardians of Asgaard" is the one the 2022 Forum staging pushed out into the audience.
Yes, it's longer. The 2022 headline set was 15 songs built around *The Great Heathen Army*; the 2026 set is built around a new album and brings back rarities from 2015 and earlier. The 2022 production (helmet riser, stone statues, dragon-boat prows) is well documented, while the 2026 staging is billed as all-new and hasn't been reviewed yet.
The one detailed account says yes. At SPAC in September 2025 the VIP buyer got a meet and greet where the band "answered every question thrown their way and posed for photos," signed comic books, a towel, a sling bag and first pick of the merch stand. Prices weren't reported.
