What Is It Like to See A Perfect Circle Live?

World Tour 2026-2027

The singer stays in shadow on a riser at the back, your phone stays in your pocket until he says otherwise, and when he finally does, right before "Judith," the whole room lights up at once.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
Your phone is off-limits until Maynard says so.

This is a strict no-recording show, with guards and flashlights, and he lifts it himself for the last song. The full story is in [Fan Culture](#fan-culture-and-traditions).

  • 2
Don't look for the singer at the front.

Maynard James Keenan sings from a riser at the back of the stage, often in fog or near-silhouette. Billy Howerdel and bassist Matt McJunkins are the ones at the lip.

  • 3
    There's an intermission now.

The 2026 shows stop for about ten minutes partway through. It isn't the end, so don't head for the exit.

  • 4
Learn the last chorus of "The Outsider" and the words to "The Noose."

Those are the two songs where the crowd stops listening and starts shouting back.

  • 5
    Openers, Nov to Dec 2026

Puscifer, Keenan's other band, on every Latin American, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese and Hawaiian date, with comedian Dave Hill also on the Australian bills. You'll watch Maynard twice in one night.

  • 6
    Openers, spring 2027

Puscifer on the Canadian dates and [Detroit](/cities/detroit) (April 13 to 25), then The Cult on every US date from April 27 to June 13.

  • 7
    This is a listening crowd.

Expect people seated or standing still for long stretches, not a pit. In Zagreb in 2026 the younger fans up front loudly shushed anyone who reached for a phone.

  • 8
The "Imagine" in the set is the slow, mournful one.

It's John Lennon's song in the funeral-march arrangement from the covers album *eMOTIVe*, and reviewers are split on whether it deserves a slot over another original.

  • 9
Buy posters from the stand or the official store only.

The r/APerfectCircle moderators warned fans in 2024 about people linking "official" posters in comment threads that were "at best, not official."

What It's Actually Like

The Frontman Is a Silhouette at the Back

Walk in expecting to stare at Maynard and you'll spend the night squinting. He sings from a raised platform at the rear of the stage, usually wrapped in fog and backlight, while Billy Howerdel and Matt McJunkins hold the front. At the Marquee Theatre in Tempe in 2010, SPIN put him about 40 feet back from the edge of the stage. At Place Bell outside Montreal in November 2017 the reviewer could "only see a shadow with long hair in the shadows," and only his voice proved he was there. At Phoenix's Comerica Theatre in November 2018 he blended so completely into the visuals that the writer had to look twice to check he hadn't left. In June 2026 at Brixton Academy in London he was still "largely stationary" on a riser at the back. If you're used to Tool, this will feel familiar. If you're not, adjust your expectations: you're here to hear him, not to watch him.

The Light Show Does the Frontman's Job

With the singer in the dark, your eyes go to the lights, and the band builds the show around that. At Brixton in 2026 three risers sat center stage, each fronted with eight circular lights, with a stage-wide screen behind and 22 fifteen-foot LED strips hanging in front of the band. The V13 reviewer compared the brightness to "Times Square" and to three trucks on full beam. On the second night the band showed up on the big screen as smoke-wrapped silhouettes. At the end of the 2018 run in Phoenix each member was backlit one at a time into a near-black outline, and an all-seeing eye eventually replaced the logo behind them. Not everyone loves it: a Zagreb reviewer in June 2026 said the psychedelic visuals got tiring over a full set.

Nobody Moshes, and That's the Point

This isn't a pit crowd. At the Bill Graham Civic in San Francisco in April 2017 a reviewer noted "there weren't the mosh pits you'd find at a Tool show" and called the crowd "transfixed." At the PNE Coliseum in Vancouver that spring, much of the room stayed in its plastic seats until "Thomas," then stood for the rest, and the hardest headbanging of the night came in "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums." In Düsseldorf in June 2026 the reviewer described the atmosphere as "religious reverence." Zagreb's reviewer that month went further and called it a seated-concert feel with lukewarm energy for long stretches. It wasn't always this way: at UCI's Bren Center in February 2001 fans pressed so hard toward the stage that some moshed during "3 Libras." Today the loud moments are saved for a couple of songs, covered in Fan Culture.

Rarities Rotate, and Fans Notice

The frame of the night barely changes. In 2026 every documented headline show opened with "The Package," ran through the Eat the Elephant songs, and closed on "Judith." The interest is in three or four middle slots that swap from night to night. At Brixton on June 3, 2026, "Kindred" made the set and "Orestes" didn't, and some fans grumbled. The next night "Gravity," "Orestes" and "Blue" came back, and Sonic Abuse said those drew the biggest reactions of the show, with "Orestes" turning into a singalong. Düsseldorf got "Orestes" and "Gravity" but no "The Noose." Even "3 Libras," their most-played song (486 times per setlist.fm), now shows up as the "All Main Courses Mix" rather than the album version. If you're seeing two nights in one city, you'll likely get two different middles.

"Imagine" Is a Funeral March, and It Splits the Room

The John Lennon cover is APC's second-most-played cover, with 117 performances logged on setlist.fm, and it sounds nothing like the original: slow, mournful, closer to a dirge. Keenan introduced it in Vancouver in 2017 with "Sorry about our country." It returned at Brixton in June 2026 for the first time since 2018 and stayed in the set through Prague. Opinions split. The CTV reviewer in Vancouver found the covers hard to recognize, and V13 at Brixton said he'd rather have heard another back-catalogue song. Covers are part of the deal with this band, though: Failure's "The Nurse Who Loved Me" has been played 146 times, more than any other cover in their history.

Keenan Barely Talks, and When He Does It's Deadpan

Don't expect speeches. A San Francisco reviewer in 2017 counted three times he spoke to the crowd all night. What he does say is dry. In Tempe in 2010, after "3 Libras": "We have health insurance policies that have matured since the last time we played this song." In Vancouver in 2017: "This is our 'reminding you we're still around' tour." At Brixton in 2026, before "Rose": "We haven't played this in a while, so if it goes wrong, it's Josh's fault." The 2018 shows leaned political, opening at the Honda Center in Anaheim with "It's a crazy time in the world," and reviewers read "The Contrarian" and "TalkTalk" as jabs at Trump and at hollow responses to gun violence. The Zagreb reviewer in 2026 took the silence as disinterest, so know that it cuts both ways.

The Voice Holds Up, Even When the Show Doesn't Land

Across 16 years of reviews, nobody says the voice is slipping. At Brixton's second night in 2026 he "sounds simply amazing throughout." A fan blog on the 2024 Sessanta opener said his vocals "seem to be getting better with age." Even Metaltalk's Hellfest review, headlined "fall flat," called his vocals "absolutely great." The one complaint about sound is his speaking voice: at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas in 2017, the PA made his between-song remarks hard to understand.

World Tour 2026-2027 (2026 to 2027)

Three legs, no official tour name, and the first headline touring since a December 2018 show in Rome. Europe and the UK ran from June 3 to July 10, 2026, starting with two sold-out nights at Brixton and finishing at Mad Cool in Madrid, their first visit to the continent in seven years. Next come Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Hawaii with Puscifer from November 25 to December 19, 2026, including Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on December 6 and Spark Arena in Auckland on December 13. Then 32 North American dates from April 13 to June 13, 2027, with Red Rocks Amphitheatre on May 27, the Hollywood Bowl on June 6 and two nights at Fontainebleau in Las Vegas just before the Phoenix finale.

Two Halves and a Steaming Maynard

The 2026 headline show is built in two parts. Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" plays from tape, then "The Package" starts in near-darkness, then the Eat the Elephant songs "Disillusioned," "The Contrarian" and "The Doomed" come in order. After "The Outsider" the stage empties for about ten minutes with "The Girl from Ipanema" on the PA; Zagreb's screen called it a "hydration break," and Sonic Abuse describes "a digital representation of a steaming Maynard for ten minutes." The second half is short and heavy: "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums," "The Noose," the new single "Starless," and "Judith." Reflections of Darkness called the break "a jarring detour." V13 didn't mind, saying it gave people time to "regroup and assess."

New Songs, Back Catalogue First

"Starless" came out a week before Brixton and made its live debut there, slotted into the back half instead of leading the show. Josh Freese is back on drums, Greg Edwards on guitar and keys, and Matt McJunkins on bass. A second single, "To Whom It May Concern," arrived in September 2026, but there's no album announced. Keenan's line on the 2027 announcement was "New tunes, new dance moves, new hair hats," so expect at least one more new song by spring. "Kindred," the 2024 single from the Sessanta split EP, rotates in and out.

“A Perfect Circle has gotten me through so much.”

The Opener Is the Same Singer

From November 2026, Puscifer opens every date, which means Keenan works the whole night, first with Puscifer's crew and then with APC. In Australia, comedian Dave Hill is also on the bill, and Rod Laver Arena lists a 6:45 PM start with an A4-size bag limit. In Europe the supports were Jehnny Beth, Reclus.É and A.A. Williams on select dates; Beth's industrial take on Björk's "Army of Me" won Brixton over, though Sonic Abuse found her mix "muddy, to say the least." For the 2027 US dates The Cult takes over from Puscifer.

Headline Rooms Beat Festival Slots

The 2026 European run mixed headline halls with festival slots, and they weren't the same show. At Hellfest the band played a main stage between Anthrax and Megadeth, with a calm setlist and a crowd Metaltalk described as "sleepy and waiting for this to end" (Freese's drumming was the bright spot). The 2025 Aftershock set in Sacramento ran 13 songs with no break. At their own shows the room is theirs: Zagreb's Šalata sold out at about 4,000, and Brixton was hot and packed on its sloped floor on both nights. If you can choose, pick a headline date.

A Perfect Circle crowd traditions

Five documented rituals. Three need you to bring something. The other two happen to you.

Bring something

Phones in the Pocket

Permanent

No recording of any kind until Keenan lifts the ban himself, usually for the last song. Security enforces it, and so does the crowd.

Filming the Last Song

Permanent

When Keenan announces the ban is over, phones come up all at once. Save your filming for that moment.

Shouting the End of "The Outsider"

Permanent

Know the final chorus. It's where the quiet crowd finally gets loud.

What's Exclusive

The new single is the collectible this cycle: "Starless" came out as a limited 7-inch in silver and black or white with sea blue and black splatter, with an etching of the crescent logo on the B-side and a 45 RPM adapter in the sleeve. The official store also carries a Sessanta Tour Collection and a blue glow-in-the-dark Sessanta E.P.P.P. 12-inch. At the 2024 Philadelphia Sessanta show, fans posted about a free "Sessantuno Amore" button handed out at the venue. No venue-only shirts or city posters from 2026 turned up in any review.

The Strategy

Posters are the one thing to be careful with. In April 2024 the r/APerfectCircle moderators warned fans not to buy posters from accounts linking to them in comments, calling those "at best, not official," so stick to the stand or store.aperfectcircle.com. European buyers have a separate EU store at eustore.aperfectcircle.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a dark, still, heavily lit show where the singer stays in silhouette at the back and the crowd mostly watches. Phones are banned until Keenan lifts it for the final song, the 2026 shows split into two halves around a ten-minute break, and the loudest moments are "The Outsider," "The Noose" and "Judith."

The 2026 headline shows ran 1h 25m to 1h 30m, including the ten-minute intermission. At Brixton on June 3, 2026, setlist.fm logged 9:15 PM to 10:40 PM.

On time, and late in the evening. Düsseldorf in 2026 started "promptly at 21:00," and the San Francisco show in 2017 began with "The Package" at "precisely 9pm." Budget your evening around a 9 PM headline start once the supports finish.
