What Is It Like to See The Maine Live?

The Tour Next Door 2026

John O'Callaghan hands his microphone to a stranger in the crowd, crowd-surfs while they sing, then stays after the show to meet everyone for free. Nineteen years of Tempe pop-rock, played like a reunion.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
    Know the openers.

Hellogoodbye opened the August dates of The Tour Next Door. In Color is billed for the November run.

  • 2
    Don't buy a meet-and-greet, because there isn't one.

The band meets fans after shows for free and has refused to sell paid packages, so budget your time, not your money.

  • 3
The barrier belongs to the regulars.

The line at the [Salt Shed](/venues/salt-shed) in [Chicago](/cities/chicago) was already past the entrance at 3 pm for 5:30 pm doors in April 2026. Plenty of these people have been to dozens of shows.

  • 4
    Learn "We All Roll Along."

On the 2026 dates O'Callaghan has been walking into the crowd mid-song and handing it to whoever is nearest. That could be you.

  • 5
Green is the color right now.

The band asked fans to wear green for the Joy Next Door shows, and the album's own vinyl is frosted green. Nobody will check, but you'll match the room.

  • 6
When he asks for phones away, he means it.

O'Callaghan has asked whole rooms to pocket their phones for a few minutes, from Manila in 2017 to London in 2024. Go with it.

  • 7
The tour shirt is on the web store too.

You don't have to sprint to the stall before doors to get the 2026 tour tee.

  • 8
Plan a January trip if you're hooked.

The next 8123 Fest, the band's own hometown festival, is 15 to 16 January 2027 at Mesa Amphitheatre in Arizona.

What It's Actually Like

John Leaves the Stage, and Learns Your Name

O'Callaghan doesn't stay behind the monitors for long. At the Salt Shed release show on 10 April 2026 he crowd-surfed out over the floor and talked at length between songs, telling the room, "When you play so many times, you start knowing people... you feel like you're growing up with folks." At House of Blues Anaheim on 21 August 2026 it was birthday shout-outs, a running bit about dyeing his mustache, and a deep cut played because drummer Pat Kirch's dad asked for it ("whatever Billy wants, Billy gets!"). At the final UK date on 26 September 2026, one fan's 100th Maine show turned into an unplanned whole-room singalong of "All Star." If you crowd-surf to the front, expect a fist bump on the way down, not a bouncer's glare.

Ten Albums Deep, and the Room Gets a Say

There are ten studio albums to pull from and they use most of them. Setlist.fm's career counts put "Like We Did (Windows Down)" on top at 523 plays, then "Black Butterflies and Déjà Vu" (454), "Bad Behavior" (401) and "Am I Pretty?" (391). The first three were in nearly every 2026 set; "Am I Pretty?" sat out the 2026 setlists we checked, so don't count on it. Beyond that, the crowd has real influence. On the 2024 Australian run they brought a noise meter and let the screaming pick between two songs; bassist Garrett Nickelsen explained, "we'll pick two different songs and have the people screaming actually pick between the two songs." At the Paramount show on 21 April 2026 a fan request got a snippet of "English Girls" reworked as a country song. Shouting a title is not rude here. Sometimes it works.

“When you start recognizing people who come to all shows, there's something comforting.”
— Jordan Wyman, fan, in Rock Sound's "Why I Love The Maine"

Phones in Pockets, Just for a While

This band asks for your attention rather than banning anything. At Bazooka Rocks in Manila in June 2017, O'Callaghan asked for phones down for four minutes, and the whole room actually did it. At the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London on 26 April 2024 the request was politer and blunter at once: "You can do what you want... but I would implore you to put your phones in your pockets now." It's an ask, not a rule, and a band that spends this much of the night walking into the crowd is better watched than filmed.

It Ends on "Black Butterflies," and There's No Encore

On the 2026 headline tour "Black Butterflies and Déjà Vu" closed 28 of 33 documented shows, and there was no encore afterward on any of them. So when that chorus starts, it's the last song. It didn't always work that way. In 2017 and 2018 "Another Night on Mars" was the closer and "Black Butterflies" sometimes opened, as it did at the Corner Hotel in February 2018. In 2026 the two songs often bookend the night, with "Another Night on Mars" opening 12 of them, the Salt Shed release show included. Don't start walking to the exit early.

Nobody Pays to Meet Them

Most bands this size sell a VIP hang. The Maine gives it away. Forbes reported in 2023 that the band "meets every fan at no cost following each tour performance," and in 2026 they again "rejected paid meet-and-greets, hoping to create a more relaxed environment to chat with fans organically," per See You Next Tuesday Media's review of the Paramount show. After the Salt Shed release show they stayed to meet fans, as usual. It goes back a long way: Rock Sound's fan feature describes them greeting fans outside the tour bus in 2010 "as if they are just catching up with friends." Factor that into your ride home.

A Room Full of People Who Recognize Each Other

This isn't a nostalgia crowd that only shows up for the 2008 songs. At the Salt Shed in April 2026 people with 15-plus years and 100-plus shows behind them stood next to first-timers. At a Georgia show on 25 April 2026, No Flash Needed's review described "a dedicated fanbase, some of whom have been following the group for nearly twenty years." Fan Logan Buhler met a best friend at a Maine show and still travels to them with her. The band feels it too. O'Callaghan told the Salt Shed crowd, "We never meant to do any of this... we are so forever in your debt."

The Tour Next Door (2026)

Eleven headline dates: three in August (Tucson, Anaheim, Sacramento) and eight in November across the Midwest and Northeast, from Newport, Kentucky to Worcester, Massachusetts. The band picked smaller and neighboring markets on purpose, to "give ourselves and everyone new experiences," and billed these as their last headline shows of the year. A dollar from every ticket goes to The Ally Coalition.

Quiet Set, Intermission, Loud Set

This is two shows in one ticket. First comes the "Quiet" set, stripped back and acoustic, with the band in suits under warm lighting. At Anaheim on 21 August 2026 that meant "Bad Behavior," "Into Your Arms," "Funny How?," a Shania Twain cover ("You're Still the One"), "These Four Words," "And Then" and "How to Exit a Room." Then a 15-minute break, and "Master of Puppets" blasting over the PA as they come back in regular clothes for the "Loud" set: "Half a Spark," "Numb Without You," "Die To Fall," "Sticky," "Identify," then the usual closing pair. Don't treat the intermission as the end. The loud half is longer.

The Quiet Set Isn't Quiet for Long

The acoustic half sounds like a sit-down idea. It isn't. Crave Music Magazine's Anaheim review clocked someone crowd-surfing in a hot pink cowboy hat during the acoustic "How to Exit a Room," and The Concert Chronicles saw a fan lob Pokémon cards onto the stage mid-set. The room was packed to capacity, called their largest Anaheim show to date. If you were hoping for a seated evening, this isn't that.

“When you start recognizing people who come to all shows, there's something comforting.”
— Jordan Wyman, fan, in Rock Sound's "Why I Love The Maine"

New Songs Up Front

Joy Next Door came out on 10 April 2026 and the loud set leans on it. "And Then," "Half a Spark" and "3:31" made their live debuts at La Rosa in Tucson on 20 August 2026, and five Joy Next Door songs sit in the set most nights. The old staples are still there, but if you only know the first two records, spend an evening with the new one before you go.

Who's Opening

Hellogoodbye opened the August run. Forrest Kline started solo with acoustic mashups of 2000s pop songs, joked about AIM and LimeWire, and handed out string lights at the barrier before the full band joined. For November, In Color is billed as support.

Coming Off Their Biggest UK Shows Yet

The Tour Next Door follows the I Love You But I Chose The Maine run, which ended in September with eight European and UK dates and Grayscale as support. Pat Kirch called them "our biggest shows in the country yet," topped by the Roundhouse in Camden on 25 September 2026. Two of the European shows moved up to bigger rooms than first announced.

What's Exclusive

The 2026 tour line is built around the "Chose" design: a Chose Tour tee, a Chose Tour tote, toddler tees and onesies (including an "I Love You but I Chose Mom" version). Album-era pieces include a Joy Next Door striped crewneck, a Next Door crewneck sweater, a retro ringer tee, a two-tone Joy hat, frosted green vinyl and a deluxe box set. An "Anaheim Tee" shows as sold out on the band's own store.

The Strategy

The Chose Tour tee and tote are listed on the official 8123 web store, so the core 2026 tour design is not a venue-only item. If you want something city-named, like the Anaheim shirt, that's the kind of thing that disappears.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a loud pop-rock show where the frontman spends a surprising amount of time in the crowd and treats regulars like old friends. Expect crowd-surfing, small dance circles and beach balls, and a singalong on almost every chorus, including songs from 2008. On The Tour Next Door it's split into an acoustic set and a full-band set.

The Maine's own part runs about 2h 5m on The Tour Next Door, including the 15-minute intermission between the two sets (doors 6:30 pm, on 8:40 pm, off 10:45 pm in Tucson on 20 August 2026). The single-set headline shows earlier in 2026 ran shorter.

Plan on 2h 10m to 2h 15m after doors. Tucson's 6:30 pm doors meant an 8:40 pm start, and the UK dates with 7 pm doors started at 9:15 pm. Paradiso on the European leg was the one documented late start, 20 minutes after the scheduled 8:30 pm.
