What Is It Like to See Paul Heaton Live?
The PA plays your city's own anthem and the whole arena sings it before a note is played. By the end his band sends you home singing "Caravan of Love" with no instruments at all.
What to Know Before You Go
- 1Learn your city's song
Before the band plays, the PA runs a local anthem and the crowd sings it back. It's the first thing that happens, so know the words. The full list is under [Fan Culture](#fan-culture-and-traditions).
- 2Know the rude version of "Don't Marry Her"
He sings it clean for the telly and leaves the sweary line to you. The radio edit won't help.
- 3Don't leave at the first encore
There are two. "Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)" and the a cappella "Caravan of Love" come after the second break. The Irish Times saw early leavers miss several highlights.
- 4Opener
The Lightning Seeds play every 2026 arena date, and their frontman Ian Broudie produced the new album.
- 5If you support a rival club, you'll be reminded
The band gets introduced player by player with their football teams, and the crowd boos accordingly.
- 6Watch his socials on gig day
In summer 2023 he put money behind the bar at pubs near TRNSMT and Tramlines for fans, first come, first served, until it ran out.
- 7Presales come through the record
Ordering *Jenius* from the official store was the route to presale access for his 2027 dates, so watch the store when a record is announced.
- 8Expect "Heatongrad" and a jab at the government
The politics are part of the set, delivered as jokes, and the room cheers them.

What It's Actually Like
Three Bands' Hits, One Fixed Running Order
You're getting The Housemartins, The Beautiful South, the Jacqui Abbott duets and the newest record in one night, and the order barely moves. On the 2024 arena run, setlist.fm's attendee-logged setlists show five Housemartins songs, a dozen Beautiful South songs and a handful of new ones, with "Happy Hour," "Perfect 10" and "Good as Gold (Stupid as Mud)" closing the main set every time. That spine held at Newcastle on 9 December 2024 and again at Bramall Lane in May 2025. The surprises are small and they land hard. At 3Arena on 20 March 2025, a setlist.fm contributor flagged "Bell Bottomed Tear" as its first airing in that city since 1994, and a Yorkshire Post reviewer at a December 2024 arena date noted it was only its second outing since 1994. If you want a different show every night, this isn't it. If you want every song you grew up with, it is.
Uncle-at-a-Wedding Dancing, on Purpose
Heaton doesn't strut. He jigs. At the Lowry in Salford on 27 May 2014, a fan shouted "let us dance" and he told the room "we can't stop you moving your feet," then showed off the moves his daughters find embarrassing. At the SEC Armadillo in November 2017, The Skinny watched him do his "I'm a little teapot" dance in a big green outdoorsy jacket. The crowd copies him. On the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage on 28 June 2024, when Norman Cook walked on with a bass for "Happy Hour," Mojo saw dads everywhere attempting the moves from the original video and "tripping themselves onto their arses." You will see men in their fifties do the "Happy Hour" dance without a shred of irony. You may well join them.
“I am a believer that it's very important to have a good jig.”
The Jokes Come First, the Politics Right Behind
Between songs he's dry, self-mocking and pointed. At 3Arena in March 2025 he described his album method as "release it, give it a weird name and then deny it," and at a December 2024 arena date he ribbed the crowd for not buying enough copies of the new record. Then the politics arrive. Headlining Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington on 27 May 2023, he told the field "we have a government that attacks you too much and me not enough," and AAH Magazine heard "a deafening cheer" as the anti-Tory chants started up again. "Heatongrad" is the political centrepiece of the set; at the Globe in Stockton on 6 December 2022, XS Noize heard him use it to make his case on tax and public services. A December 2014 theatre show had a union banner behind the band reading "Paul and Jacqui say Britain needs a pay rise." If that bothers you, you've picked the wrong gig.
The Loudest Moments Are the Old Singles
The new songs get a hearing. The Beautiful South singles get bellowed. At the Globe in Stockton in December 2022, XS Noize heard "Almost 3,000 people raised the roof" for "Rotterdam." At a sold-out December 2024 arena show, UK Music Reviews found "Don't Marry Her" drew "one of the biggest reactions" of the night. In Sheffield, the city he grew up in, "Perfect 10" was the "mass singalong" at the arena on 10 December 2022. And at Bramall Lane on 25 May 2025, "Happy Hour" had everyone up and dancing through the showers. The crowd skews toward people who bought these records first time round (Mojo counted "dads everywhere" at Glastonbury), and at Neighbourhood Weekender 2023 AAH Magazine saw dancing all the way back to the food stalls and couples slow-dancing to the ballads.
It Ends Without Instruments, So Stay
The last song is "Caravan of Love," the Housemartins' a cappella cover, and the band sings it with nothing behind them. It closed the Lowry in May 2014 and a December 2014 theatre show, and it closed every 2024 arena date logged on setlist.fm, where it is his most-played song as a solo act. The build to it is fixed: after the main set, a first encore of "One Last Love Song" and "You Keep It All In," then a second of "Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)" and "Caravan of Love." At 3Arena in March 2025 they added Stevie Wonder's "A Place in the Sun," also unaccompanied, after it, and the Irish Times noted that people who left early missed several of the night's best moments. At The Piece Hall on 23 July 2025, the Yorkshire Post heard the "acapella version" close a sold-out night after two encores. The room goes quiet enough to hear the harmonies, which after a night of shouting is its own kind of shock.
UK Arena Tour (2026)
Eleven arena dates from 29 October to 14 November 2026, starting at Newcastle's Utilita Arena and ending at Co-op Live, with a two-show night at CHALK in Brighton on 3 December tacked on. It follows Jenius, released 21 August 2026 and his first solo UK number one album.
A New Record Made With the Opening Act
Jenius was produced by Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, and the Lightning Seeds are special guests on every arena date, so the support set and the new songs come from the same studio. It has 15 songs, and the lead single "Favourite Kind Of Idiot" features Rianne Downey, which Heaton calls "probably the most romantic song on the album." On the title, he told NME: "If anybody ever calls me a genius, I always say, 'What?! With a J?!'" No setlist from the arena run exists yet; the only 2026 performances logged on setlist.fm are radio and TV sessions in August. Based on the 2024 and 2025 shows, expect a block of new songs in the middle and the old singles holding the back end.
Rianne Downey Sings Beside Him, Not Jacqui Abbott
Jacqui Abbott isn't on this tour. The Glaswegian country and folk singer Rianne Downey is billed as special guest singer, and she sings on Jenius. Reviewers on the 2024 run liked her: My Vintage Rock, a fan blog, said at Newcastle that "she did a fantastic job" and her vocals "blended beautifully with Heaton's," and UK Music Reviews credited her with "new depth and colour." At 3Arena in March 2025 she sang "Silly Me" on her own, per setlist.fm.
Capped Tickets, Big Rooms
Tickets were capped at £39.50 plus fees, about $53, with general sale on 5 June 2026. That's up from £35 (about $47) on the 2024 tour and £30 (about $41) in 2022. Heaton has been open about it: "I kept the ticket prices down on the last tour" and still made "a massive profit," he told NME in April 2025. The O2 Arena date is 7 November, and the Sheffield date on 6 November is the closest thing to a homecoming on the run.
What Comes After
Summer 2027 is already announced: Neighbourhood Weekender (29 May), The O2 Belfast (4 June), 3Arena (5 June), Live at the Marquee in Cork (3 July) and a stadium show at Headingley on 12 June with Echo & The Bunnymen, The Guestlist and Curiosity Shop. The Lightning Seeds support on the Irish dates.

Merch
What's Exclusive
Event-specific designs exist and outlast the event: a Bramall Lane tee and a Bramall Lane badge made for the May 2025 stadium show are still listed on the band-run Big Cartel store. There's football-kit merch too, an O'Neills St Helens football shirt and an O'Neills tracksuit top that sold out, plus "Welcome to Heatongrad" designs.
Prices
Prices come from the two official online stores, converted from pounds. Tees: $14-27 (£10 to £20). The Mighty Several tee: $27 (£20). Bramall Lane tee: $20 (£15). Hoodies: $14-23 (£10 to £17). Bucket hats: $11-14 (£8 to £10). Tote bag: $14 (£10).
The Strategy
Heaton says he sits in the pricing meetings for exactly this: "I make sure they're not 70 or 80 quid." Event designs have stayed on sale online after the show, so the stand isn't your only shot. We found no reliable fan reports on venue queues, venue-only items or quality, so we're not guessing.

Paul Heaton + Jacqui Abbott
Abbott rejoined him in 2014 for *What Have We Become*, and at a December 2014 theatre show Louder Than War wrote "she seems to be still pinching herself she is back on stage." The duo played theatres, then arenas through the *Crooked Calypso* (2017) and *N.K-Pop* (2022) tours; setlist.fm logs 160 shows under the joint name.
The 50:50 Tour
For his 50th birthday he cycled 2,500 miles in 40 days to play 33 pubs across the UK and Ireland, per NME.
The Beautiful South (1989 to 2006) and The Housemartins
The Housemartins' first logged show was at the Wellington Club in Hull on 13 October 1984, per setlist.fm, and "Happy Hour" and "Sheep" were already their most-played songs.
Frequently Asked Questions
It's a big, warm, beery singalong through three bands' worth of hits, with a man in his sixties doing deliberately daft dances in between. Expect Housemartins and Beautiful South singles, and a crowd that knows every word of the old singles.
His headline sets run 1h 45m to 1h 55m, including two encores, per setlist.fm timings from 2024 and 2025. The support set comes before that.
Usually between 8:40 pm and 8:50 pm on recent headline dates. For the 2026 tour, one arena listing has doors at 6 pm and the first act on at 7 pm.
Most of the set. On the 2024 tour roughly two thirds of each night was Housemartins and Beautiful South material, from "Sheep" and "Me and the Farmer" to "A Little Time" and "Rotterdam."
Yes, if those records mean anything to you. The back half of the show is wall-to-wall singles, and reviewers from The Skinny in 2017 to Hot Press in 2025 describe crowds dancing and bellowing along. Gayle Ramage's review of the short 2025 unplugged set is the rare grumble, and that was about length, not quality.
"Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)," "Perfect 10," "Old Red Eyes Is Back" and "Happy Hour" are the ones the room waits for, and they sit near the top of his setlist.fm play counts. "Bell Bottomed Tear" is the rarity that has started turning up again.
Sometimes, yes. In summer 2023 he left money behind the bar at pubs near TRNSMT and Tramlines, and in 2022 he did it at 60 pubs across the UK and Ireland for his 60th birthday. He told The Star he tends to do it "spur of the moment."
The rooms and the co-singer have changed more than the songs. The Housemartins played Hull clubs from 1984; he has now logged 735+ shows across his bands on setlist.fm and plays The O2. Jacqui Abbott shared the stage from 2014 into early 2023.
