What Is It Like to See Mighty Oaks Live?

GO FOR BROKE Tour 2026

The encore happens around one microphone, sometimes with no amplification at all: three singers from three countries, and a room that's been pin-drop quiet all night leaning in to hear them.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
Stay for the encore, and stop talking when it starts

The three members walk to the front and sing around a single mic, or none. If the room chats, the back hears nothing.

  • 2
    Learn "Brother"

It's the song the crowd actually sings back. In Bremen in 2024 it was the last song of the night.

  • 3
Don't mistake the silence for boredom

German and Swiss crowds at these shows listen hard between songs. Ian Hooper once admitted it threw him, coming from louder US rooms, before he decided it meant people were paying attention.

  • 4
This tour is the loud one

The GO FOR BROKE Tour 2026 brings the full band back after two years of trio-only shows, with unreleased songs from a new album mixed in with "Brother" and "Just One Day."

  • 5
Bring tissues for "When I Dream, I See"

Hooper tells you it's about his mother, who died in 2012, before he starts.

  • 6
    The banter is in German

Hooper is American but talks to the crowd in good German. The songs are in English, so you'll only miss the stories.

  • 7
    Opener

June Carousel on the 2026 club dates. Past support has been strong: [Giant Rooks](/artists/giant-rooks) opened for them in 2017, and one Bielefeld reviewer thought they outplayed the headliner.

  • 8
    Salzburg bars under-6s

SZENE in Salzburg doesn't admit children under 6 for the 2026 date.

What It's Actually Like

The Encore Is Three People and One Microphone

This is the Mighty Oaks move, and it shows up on tour after tour. At Les Docks in Lausanne in December 2017, Hooper told the room they'd play "One Shot" unplugged except for one microphone "without which nothing could be heard," and the Indie Nation blog wrote that the harmonies and violin gave chills. At Bielefeld's Ringlokschuppen that November, the same song went out around a hypersensitive condenser mic and the crowd held its applause until halfway through (be-subjective). At Zermatt Unplugged in April 2018 they sang the encore unamplified, per the Planet Sarah blog. At Huxleys Neue Welt in 2020 they gathered at one mic for "Aileen" and explained that every one of their songs has to work that way. It was still there at the Brunnenhof in Trier in July 2025. From the floor it feels like the room shrinking: everyone leans forward, and the people talking at the bar get shushed.

Three Lead Voices, No Backing Singers

Nobody here is the frontman with two harmony guys. Hooper (from the US), Claudio Donzelli (Italy) and Craig Saunders (UK) all sing lead, and the three-part blend is the sound. At the Schlachthof in Bremen in October 2024, the set opened on a three-part vocal, and Nordevents described the three voices filling the Kesselhalle with no drums behind them. Instruments rotate too. That night they swapped guitar, banjo, piano and bass between three equal-height platforms (hb-people), and at Huxleys Hooper started the opener, "Driftwood Seat," on ukulele. Watch the hands as much as the faces: whoever is on mandolin this song may be on piano the next.

“Ian, Claudio and Craig radiate such good live energy that it reaches every person in the room.”
— untoldency, Huxleys Berlin, 2020 (translated from German)

A Crowd That Listens Before It Sings

Expect quiet. At Bielefeld in 2017 the reviewer said between songs "you could hear a pin drop," and he found the room stiff in the hips during the fast songs. Montreux in July 2022 had an "almost eerie wall of silence" with polite clapping (Rock Music Raider). In Bremen in 2024 the full house "listens calmly and respectfully," then applauded loudly after each song (hb-people). Then a handful of songs flip the room into a choir, covered in Fan Culture. The crowd skews older than you'd guess: the Huxleys reviewer saw "almost more parents than teenagers," put the odds of a moshpit at "-20%," and there wasn't one.

"When I Dream, I See" Gets Introduced, and People Cry

Hooper doesn't let this one start cold. He tells the room it's about his mother, who died of cancer in 2012: at Montreux in 2022 he introduced it as a tribute to a parent he lost early, and in Frankfurt in May 2026 hessenschau called it the most emotional moment of the night. Some fans were in tears during it at Täubchenthal (mainstage.de). It closed the Huxleys show in 2020. At Lausanne in 2017 Hooper also stayed alone on stage with the violinist for "The Dark," which he explained was about Alzheimer's, the disease that killed his grandfather and Craig's father. These aren't throwaway intros, and the room goes still for them.

Hooper Talks, in German, About How It Started

He's from Washington State, but he keeps up the chat in what one Bielefeld reviewer called "really good German." In Bremen he began in English, and when someone in the crowd called out "Is' ganz schön voll, wa?" ("pretty full in here, huh?") he switched over and stayed there. He tells the band's story from the stage: at Täubchenthal in 2022 he described being homeless after a breakup and sleeping in Claudio's recording studio, where the band began. In Osnabrück that March he toasted the crowd with "So jung kommen wir nicht mehr zusammen" (we'll never be this young together again) and talked about the war in Ukraine. At Huxleys he told everyone the band can only give back as much energy as it gets. He means it as an instruction.

The Debate: Cozy or Too Polite?

Most reviewers come out warm. Nordevents headlined its Bremen review "Wohnzimmerkonzert" (living-room concert), minutenmusik called Osnabrück "relaxed, cozy, and full of enthusiasm," and musicheadquarter watched a "blissful audience" walk out of Trier after a rainy last half hour that turned into a party. The dissent is real, though. Bielefeld's be-subjective reviewer in 2017 said the show was "by no means bad or boring," but the spark never caught and the support band "clearly rocked more than the headliner." Whether you love it depends on whether you want to sing or to listen.

GO FOR BROKE Tour (2026)

Twenty-three dates from 16 November to 15 December 2026 across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, mostly clubs and mid-size halls (Songkick). It runs through Hamburg's Grosse Freiheit 36 the next night, the Muffathalle in Munich on 7 December and a Berlin homecoming at Huxleys on 9 December, and finishes with three nights at Mühle Hunziken in Rubigen, Switzerland, from 13 to 15 December.

The Full Band Returns

For two years Mighty Oaks played as a trio with no drums. This tour reverses that. The band announced it with a video of the live band and said they were feeling "sentimental" about full-band shows (eventim magazin), and the promoter copy promises the energy of their festival years alongside the intimacy of the acoustic run, an evening "meant to be felt, not just heard." The last full-band review we found, Montreux in 2022, had the drummer "suddenly going wild" in the finale of "When I Dream, I See."

Unreleased Material Written for the Stage

There's a new album coming, but no title or date had been announced by October 2026. What the band has said is that the songs were written specifically for playing live, and the set will mix them with early material like "Brother" and "Just One Day" (regioactive, January 2026). If you know only Howl, expect a few unfamiliar songs in the middle of the set.

The Orchestra Warm-Up

The two biggest 2026 shows so far weren't club dates. On 29 and 30 May the band played the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, both nights sold out, the second streamed. "All Things Go" opened with just guitars before the orchestra built in on "Storm" and "Land of Broken Dreams," and Hooper told the hall, "I've never made music with an orchestra before!" There were three standing ovations and two encores, ending on "Brother" and "Endless Summer" (setlist.fm). One fan, Julius, told hessenschau it was "almost a bit disappointing having to hear Mighty Oaks without the orchestra now." Don't expect strings in November.

Opener and Tickets

June Carousel, a German-Irish act, is listed as support in Munich, Salzburg and Prague. Shows start at 8:00 PM, with doors at 7:00 PM in Salzburg. Tickets in Flensburg start at €49 (Eventim) and Prague is 690 CZK. Ian Hooper also has solo German dates planned for spring 2027.

Mighty Oaks crowd traditions

Two documented rituals. All of them need preparation.

Bring something

Singing "Brother" Back

Permanent

The 2014 song is the one a quiet Mighty Oaks crowd sings out loud, so learn the words.

The "Be With You Always" Choir

Permanent

Fans sing the chorus as a choir, and at least once the band asked them to stop clapping so it sounded like one.

Merch

Merch intel is thin. None of the reviews we found mention the merch stand, prices or items. Official band merch is sold through Universal Music's German store, which lists Mighty Oaks T-shirts, posters and buttons, though no prices were readable when we checked. The High Times LP was out of stock at the Season of Mist shop in October 2026. One warning if you shop online: searches for "Mighty Oaks" merch are flooded by an unrelated US charity, Mighty Oaks Programs, whose hoodies and tees have nothing to do with the band.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mostly quiet, with loud peaks. It's built on three lead voices over acoustic guitars, banjo, mandolin and piano, and the band saves the volume for songs like "Mexico," which closed the Bremen main set in 2024 with the platforms lit in the colours of the Mexican flag.

The last headline run, the acoustic trio shows of 2024 and 2025, ran 1h 15m to 1h 30m. The full-band 2026 dates have no timings yet. For the evening around it: Lausanne in 2017 had the opener on at 8:00 PM and Mighty Oaks on at 9:00 PM.

Yes, if you like harmonies more than volume. Reviewers from Bremen to Trier describe a warm, cozy night, and minutenmusik found the live versions more varied than the albums.
