What Is It Like to See McFly Live?

Summer 2026 UK Outdoor Run

Twenty years in, four men in their late thirties are still doing the exact same kick-and-spin from the "5 Colours in Her Hair" video, on purpose, every night, while the entire venue sings the doo-doos back at them.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
Tom and Danny swap lead vocals constantly.

This is the single thing first-timers find confusing. Tom Fletcher fronts "All About You," "Obviously," "Star Girl," and "The Heart Never Lies." Danny Jones fronts "5 Colours in Her Hair," "I'll Be OK," "Room on the 3rd Floor," and "Happiness." Dougie Poynter takes lead on "Transylvania." Harry Judd sings from the kit. You're watching four lead singers in one band.

  • 2
"5 Colours in Her Hair" is the final song every night.

Setlist.fm shows it closed 29 of 29 logged Power To Play shows. They've never moved it from the encore since 2004. If you only know one McFly song, that's the one to stay for.

  • 3
The fan name is Galaxy Defenders, from "Star Girl."

Lyric: "Galaxy Defenders, stay forever, never get enough of you." It's printed on signs in the crowd, sewn on vintage hoodies, and used unironically on the McFly subreddit. Use it.

  • 4
"All About You" is the wedding song.

In January 2013, Tom posted his wedding-speech video serenading wife Giovanna with the song backed by a children's choir. It crossed 20 million views and the song is now a UK wedding first-dance staple. Live, Tom will reference the wedding when he introduces it. Galaxy Defenders cry.

  • 5
The opener on the 2026 outdoor run is split between Twin Atlantic and Remember Monday.

Remember Monday represented the UK at Eurovision 2025, so younger fans are arriving earlier than usual at the heritage dates.

  • 6
The 2026 dates are outdoor heritage venues.

Cardiff Castle, Lincoln Castle, The Piece Hall in Halifax, Delamere and Thetford forests. Family-friendly. Kids on shoulders during "Obviously" is normal. Curfews mean sets are shorter than indoor headlining nights.

  • 7
Vintage tour hoodies are the dress code if you're going for it.

2008 Radio:ACTIVE hoodies, Anthology 2016 capsule pieces, "Galaxy Defenders" lyric tees. Look at the rack on Depop before you go. Long-time fans wear theirs as a visible "I've been here longer than you" badge.

  • 8
At Wembley dates, Boxpark is the pre-show pub.

They play McFly hits over the PA before doors. Galaxy Defenders meet up there to compare outfits before walking over to OVO Arena Wembley.

  • 9
The merch capsules sell out within days online.

The 2025 "Team McFly" Busted Vs. McFly hoodie sold out before the tour reached its mid-point. Buy on store.mcfly.com (USD) or mcfly.tmstor.es (GBP) at pre-sale, not at the venue. Full prices and strategy in the [Merch section](#merch) below.

  • 10
Bring a sign if you want a shout-out.

McFly read crowd signs and have done since the 2008 Up Close tour, especially during the acoustic mid-set when Tom and Danny are sitting on stools at the lip of the stage.

What It's Actually Like

The Synchronised Dancing Has Never Stopped

McFly shows have run on the same chassis since 2004. Four guys playing their own instruments, swapping positions mid-song, pulling off the small synchronised steps they were doing on Top of the Pops twenty years ago. It is not slick boyband choreo. It is the same identical kick-and-spin Tom and Danny did on the "5 Colours in Her Hair" video, repeated across two decades, now performed by men in their late thirties who are still doing it on purpose. The Cambridge Corn Exchange Songs Behind The Music review of the November 20, 2023 Power To Play show called it out specifically: "their chemistry is as clear as ever, delivering all the synchronised dancing and on-stage banter that has become so crucial to McFly's live performances." Harry Judd, classically trained drummer and former Strictly Come Dancing winner, sometimes leaves the kit during the encore to dance with the front three. If you've only seen them on a chat-show couch, the live version is the one where the dancing is the point.

Tom and Danny Are Both The Frontman

There is no single lead singer. Tom Fletcher fronts the piano songs and the sentimental ones. Danny Jones fronts the guitar songs and the rock cuts. They swap entire songs, not just verses. Dougie Poynter sings lead on "Transylvania" and "Bubble Wrap" and brings the pop-punk lung the others can't. Harry Judd sings backing from the drum kit. Galaxy Defenders call this "four lead singers in one band," and it is the structural fact that explains why their shows can do twenty years of catalog in ninety minutes without anyone running out of voice. At Wembley Arena on August 19, 2025, one repeat attendee on his "tenth time maybe" seeing them flagged the back-to-back of "Obviously" into "I'll Be Back" as "an emotional supernova right there," which only works because Tom and Danny are sharing the workload across the same hour of songs.

I've never seen them look so fucking happy to be on the stage.

"5 Colours In Her Hair" Always Closes The Show

Every full McFly headline show since 2004 has ended with "5 Colours in Her Hair." Setlist.fm logs it closing 29 of 29 counted Power To Play shows in 2023, every Young Dumb Thrills date in 2021, and the joint McFly-Busted encores in 2025. The audience knows the "Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo" intro and the call-and-response middle section, and the entire venue does it together every single night. Fans who've been to five or more shows describe it as "the bit where everyone in the building is doing the same thing at the same time." On the Busted Vs. McFly Wembley dates in August and September 2025, McFly switched to the US single edit (with the Miss McKenzie lyric) instead of the UK version as a deliberate fan-service variant. The Wembley reviewer flagged it as a "life achievement complete" moment for fans who'd been waiting to hear it live.

Tom Writes The Talking

Tom Fletcher is the band's resident sentimental-speech-giver. On every tour since the 2011 Keep Calm and Play Louder run, he has done a mid-set "thanks for sticking with us" monologue that fans either find moving or find a bit much. The reference point everyone has is the January 2013 wedding-speech video where Tom serenaded his wife Giovanna over a medley of "Obviously," "Sorry's Not Good Enough," and "All About You" backed by a children's choir. The video crossed 20 million views per ITV News, and "All About You" is now a documented UK wedding first-dance song because of it. Live, when Tom introduces "All About You" he will reference the wedding, and the crowd reacts like they have all been to the same wedding. Danny Jones handles the cheeky lad banter between songs. Dougie handles the dry punk one-liners. Harry barely says anything and pulls his shirt off by the encore.

The Crowd Grew Up With Them

The McFly audience is now mostly people in their late 20s through early 40s who bought "Room on the 3rd Floor" as teenagers in 2004 and have brought their partners (and increasingly their kids) along to the comeback shows. The Wembley 2025 reviewer noted that "even Miss McKenzie (IYKYK) is 53 in the song now and the fans have grown too." The crowd is overwhelmingly women in their 30s singing every lyric, dragging slightly-bewildered partners with them, plus a sub-population of pop-punk lifers who came in through Charlie Simpson, Fightstar, and the 2010 Pop Punk World Tour. Mosh pits don't happen. The floor is dense but not crushing. There is no dress code. Fans wear vintage Radio:ACTIVE hoodies from 2008, Anthology capsule pieces from 2016, and "Galaxy Defenders" lyric tees. Look at what people are wearing and you can roughly date when they first saw the band.

The Emotional Flavor Is "Mates Reunion," Not Catharsis

The dominant fan account of a McFly show is not transcendence and not euphoria. It is the feeling of going to a wedding for someone you went to school with. Songs map to specific years of your life. "Obviously" if you were fourteen in 2004. "Love Is Easy" if you got engaged around 2012. "Happiness" if you came back during lockdown. After Danny Jones' first show back on September 14, 2021 (the rescheduled Young Dumb Thrills tour, after he had spoken publicly about anxiety), the Coop Scoops review described attendees "not being able to process what had happened and sitting in a state of shock on the journey back." That is the McFly emotional register: not "best night of your life" energy, but "the four of them are still here, and so are you" energy. First-timers, especially partners dragged along, almost always come out saying "I get it now."

Summer 2026 UK Outdoor Run (June 2026)

Roughly nine dates across UK heritage venues in June 2026: St Mary's Stadium Southampton (June 7), Lincoln Castle (June 14), High Lodge Thetford Forest (June 17), British Airways Arc London (June 18), Delamere Forest Northwich at Forest Live 2026 (June 21), The Piece Hall Halifax (June 23 and 24), and Cardiff Castle (June 25). Cardiff Castle and multiple Piece Hall dates have sold out months ahead, per depotcardiff.com and Songkick.

The Setlist Is "Power To Play" Plus The Singles Run

Based on the late-2025 Busted Vs. McFly tour and the 2024 O2 dates, expect a heavy lean on the 2023 "Power To Play" rock cuts opening the set: "Where Did All the Guitars Go?", "God of Rock & Roll", and the title track. The middle of the set is the singles run: "Star Girl," "Obviously," "I'll Be OK," "All About You" (acoustic, just Tom and Danny). "Red" has been kept as a main-set closer through 2025 and is the standout from the Power To Play material live. Then encore into "5 Colours in Her Hair." Sets are roughly 75 to 90 minutes because the heritage venues enforce local-authority curfews (Cardiff Castle has historically capped at 22:30).

Twin Atlantic And Remember Monday Both Open

Both acts split the support slot across the run. Remember Monday are the country-pop trio who represented the UK at Eurovision 2025, and their inclusion is part of why younger fans are turning up earlier than usual at the heritage dates. Twin Atlantic are the Scottish rock band who fit the heavier "Power To Play" energy. Both are worth arriving early for.

I've never seen them look so fucking happy to be on the stage.
Kendall Lacey, on McFly at OVO Arena Wembley, August 19, 2025

The Production Is Stripped Back From Indoor Arena

No square in-the-round configuration on the heritage dates. Single forward-facing stage, the descending illuminated McFly logo as the centrepiece (carried over from the Power To Play 2023 production and the Busted Vs. McFly 2025 stage), confetti and pyro at peak moments. Compared to indoor arena dates, the trade-off is shorter sets and less production scale, but the visual reward is outdoor sunset light during "Obviously" and the Castle walls lighting up red during the encore.

Fan Verdict So Far

The McFly subreddit consensus is that outdoor heritage venues are the optimal format for the current era of the band: outdoor light, family-friendly crowd, no problem hearing each other between songs, no claustrophobic floor crush. The trade-off is that you don't get the deep cuts that come out at the longer indoor headline runs (the acoustic Tom-and-Danny segment is shorter, and Dougie's "Transylvania" doesn't always make the heritage-set cut).

What's Exclusive

The 2025 Busted Vs. McFly Tour capsule (a co-branded line, red McFly side and yellow Busted side) sold at the joint dates and online during August and September 2025. Galaxy Defenders had to pick a side. Now sold out at the official store. The Summer 2025 outdoor capsule introduced the "Ready To Soft Rock" line of tees and hoodies. A one-off "One Night Only Zombie Tour" hoodie tied to a pop-up date is currently the highlight of the Last Chance section. Power To Play 2023 lithograph posters are now considered collector items on resale.

The Strategy

Online pre-order is the move. Tour-specific capsules sell out within days of launch online, well before venue stock arrives. The 2025 "Team McFly" hoodie sold out before the tour reached its mid-point. At indoor arena dates, the merch stands had shortest queues during the Busted set portion of the 2025 dates (because most McFly-specific fans had already bought during their set). For the 2026 outdoor dates, the merch tent is normally near the entrance and easier to access between sets. Vintage 2008 Radio:ACTIVE hoodies appear on Depop at £40 to £80 depending on size and condition. The 2016 Anthology capsule commands a premium because of limited initial stock.

Quality Verdict

The current tour hoodies are heavyweight cotton with screen-printed (not vinyl-pressed) graphics. Galaxy Defenders on the McFly subreddit consistently rate them as worth the $96 to $105 price tag. The best-value tee is the "Lightening" photo tee at $55, which fans report as actually durable through repeated washing (unusual praise for a tour shirt). The fitted women's tees from 2023 onwards run small per the subreddit and store.mcfly.com reviews. The "Last Chance" section at store.mcfly.com is where past-tour items end up at 30 to 40 percent off, which is how the Zombie Tour hoodie dropped from $98 launch to $62.
