What Is It Like to See Lizzy McAlpine Live?
Lamps, armchairs and a band in studio headphones with no click track, while a room full of people in long skirts sings the "I Guess" choir she taught them.
What to Know Before You Go
- 1Learn two crowd parts.
She taught audiences a three-line choir melody for the bridge of "I Guess," and by 2024 crowds were singing it back on their own. The "ceilings" bridge belongs to the room too.
- 2Check which opener your date has.
The Over Country Tour splits them: Sydney Ross Mitchell on the spring theater dates, Searows and Post Animal on the June and July arena dates.
- 3Listen to Angel before you go.
At the September 2026 release shows she played the new album start to finish, in order, with only "Spring Into Summer" from before.
- 4Your phone might end up in a pouch.
Those same release shows sealed phones in magnetic pouches until the exit. Nothing's been announced for 2027, so check your ticket info.
- 5Keep quiet inside the songs.
Her crowds scream when she walks on, then go near-silent once the music starts. One 2024 reviewer said you don't want to scream over the band "because they are too good not to fully take in."
- 6Bring tissues for the 13th track.
Every album's 13th song is about her late father, and live it's the heaviest stretch of the night.
- 7Join the fan project if there is one.
Fans have organized paper hearts with printed lyrics (2023) and star-shaped signs (2024) for specific songs.

What It's Actually Like
You're Sitting in Her Living Room
The stage doesn't look like a concert stage. On the 2023 End of the Movie Tour a black cloth came off to reveal a couch, Turkish carpets, a coat rack and reading lamps, and at the Riviera she'd walk over and switch on a lamp before she started singing. At The Wiltern that May there were paned windows, picture frames and a blanket thrown over the back of the couch. By the 2024 Older Tour the room had become a recording studio: warm orange lamplight, vintage chairs, the band walking in through a "control room" door. She designed it herself. It feels less like a show than being let into the house.
No Click Track, No Safety Net
There's no click and no backing track, and she's said so from the stage. Before "drunk running" at House of Blues in Boston on May 1, 2023, she told the room, "we don't have any click [track] or anything; we're really just rawdogging it." The upside is that songs breathe. On the Older Tour "Come Down Soon" stretched into a long pedal-steel outro, "Staying" got its own band jam at the end, and "ceilings" was slowed down and rebuilt around an organ part and building guitars. If you came for the record exactly as you know it, you won't get it, and that's the point.
“It basically feels like a living room, which was my design.”
Screaming at the Walk-On, Silence Once She Plays
The volume swings hard. The walk-on is loud, sometimes "raucous," and then the room goes quiet for the song itself. On the Older Tour's opening night, April 21, 2024, the crowd cheered loudly before the show and settled once it began. At her first Newport Folk Festival in July 2026 she held thousands on the lawn "in rapt silence" between rock sets.
The 13th Track Hurts
Every album's 13th track is about her late father. "Every 13th track on all of my albums is about him," she told an Older Tour crowd before "March," which ran straight into "chemtrails" as a medley at Radio City Music Hall in June 2024. At one of the September 2026 release shows, the new 13th track, "The crowd," was described by the reviewer as one of the rawest moments they'd seen at any concert. One 2024 reviewer called the "chemtrails" performance "so stunning it's tear inducing."
Covers and a Nightly Surprise
Covers are a standing part of the night, and Joni Mitchell is the well she keeps going back to. On the Older Tour's European leg she played a different Joni song at each show: a solo "Edith and the Kingpin" on October 27, 2024, "The Circle Game" the next night. She sang "Woodstock" at a July 2026 orchestral guest set. The Older Tour also had a rotating surprise slot at the top of the encore: "Pancakes for Dinner" for her grandmother, who was in the room at Radio City on June 18, 2024, then Stevie Wonder's "Lately" the next night, and a solo "Apple Pie" on the UK leg. One night in Europe she introduced "Over-The-Ocean Call" with "I have never played this song live with a band before, sorry if it's boring."
The Over Country Tour (2027)
The tour behind fourth album Angel (out September 18, 2026), named for its track "Over country." It opens February 3, 2027 in Adelaide, works through Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the UK, then hits North America from April 30 to July 17. The North American leg starts in theaters (two Fox Theatres, DPAC, The Midland) and moves into arenas in June and July, including Madison Square Garden on June 24, plus a return to Red Rocks Amphitheatre on July 6. "We're going over country!!!" was her own announcement.
Two Different Opener Bills
The spring theater shows (April 30 to May 18) have Sydney Ross Mitchell opening. The arena and amphitheater stretch (June 16 to July 17) has Searows and Post Animal. Outside North America, Mila Bea, Worthitpurchase, Flyte and SRCHR are listed for select dates. Nobody has seen these bills yet, so there's no fan verdict. It's a change from 2024, when she skipped openers entirely so she could start and finish earlier.
What the Release Shows Tell You
The closest preview is the three Angel release shows in September 2026, at EartH in Hackney, Music Hall of Williamsburg and a small South Pasadena auditorium. All three ran the same 15 songs: 14 Angel songs in album order from "The light in the painting" to "Angel," then "Spring Into Summer," when "every person in the building sings every word." Phones were sealed in magnetic pouches and unlocked on the way out. She explained where and when each song was written, and before "Over country" she asked fans to hold the people they loved. The band is Taylor Mackall on keys, Mason Stoops on lead guitar, Omar Akrouche on bass and Kane Ritchotte on drums, introduced as her "Boyfriend on Drums."
Sitting or Standing Is Still Undecided
She told Nylon in September 2026 that she was still working out whether to sit or stand onstage this time: "I don't really know how I exist onstage yet." The 2024 tour was fully seated, band and all, and she has said the walk-around, "woooo!" style of her 2022 shows "didn't feel correct." Nothing about the 2027 staging has been published yet.

Lizzy McAlpine crowd traditions
Four documented rituals. All of them need preparation.
Bring something
The "I Guess" Choir
PermanentThe crowd sings a three-line choir melody in the bridge of "I Guess," a part she taught audiences herself.
The "ceilings" Bridge
PermanentThe crowd takes the bridge of "ceilings," the TikTok song, and sings it louder than she does.
Fan-Made Light and Sign Projects
PermanentFans organize a coordinated hold-up for one song. The project changes from tour to tour; the habit doesn't.
The Skirt Uniform

Merch
No tour apparel prices or fan quality reports have surfaced yet, so we're not going to guess. The only exclusive on record from the Angel cycle is on her web store, not at the venue: the Peach and Hummingbird vinyl variants, marked as LM exclusives, plus signed vinyl and CDs. All of them were listed as sold out on lizzymcalpine.shop on October 11, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
It's a quiet, musician-first show where the band plays without a click track and she stops to tell you where songs were written. Older Tour nights mixed the newest album in order with covers (a different Joni Mitchell song each night on the European leg) and one surprise.
About 1h 35m. setlist.fm logs her June 18, 2024 Radio City show at 8:45 PM to 10:20 PM.
Long skirts are the closest thing to a uniform. In 2023 it was floral maxi skirts with leather jackets, and on the 2024 UK leg it was long white skirts with black bows.
Mostly the newest album plus a surprise. On the Older Tour the first half was *Older* front to back, and [the encore opened with a rotating pick](#covers-and-a-nightly-surprise).
No. Reviewers of the 2024 tour described a seven-piece band with no backing or click tracks, and she has joked about it from the stage. That's why the live arrangements of "ceilings" and "Come Down Soon" sound different from the records.
At Radio City on June 18, 2024, she went on at 8:45 PM for an 8:00 PM listing. That's one logged night. Most 2027 North American dates list a 7 PM start, so check your venue's set times on the day.
Yes, if you want to hear a band actually play. The reworked arrangements and the covers don't exist on the records. If you want choreography and screens, this isn't that show.
"ceilings" and "doomsday" are the staples: setlist.fm counts them as her most-played, at 95 and 94 performances. "Spring Into Summer" closed her 2026 release shows and her Newport set.
Yes: it's bigger and built around *Angel* instead of *Older*. The 2024 tour played theaters and amphitheaters, while the 2027 North American leg moves into arenas like Madison Square Garden in its second half.
