What Is It Like to See Hans Zimmer Live?

Hans Zimmer Live: The Next Level 2025-2027

The man who wrote Gladiator stands in a 19-piece rock band playing electric bass, Lebo M sings the opening call of "Circle of Life" himself, and not one frame of film appears on the screens.

What to Know Before You Go

  • 1
    Check the ticket name

"Hans Zimmer Live" means Zimmer is on stage. "The World of Hans Zimmer" is a separate symphonic production of his music that he does not perform in, and Candlelight or "Music of Hans Zimmer & Others" nights are tribute shows.

  • 2
    No opener

Zimmer's band is the whole evening. The night is split by an intermission, and the Gladiator block lands just before the break.

  • 3
    Strobes and lasers all night

One Australian venue listing for this run warns of flashing lights, lasers, strobes, haze and pyrotechnics. The Dark Knight section is the most intense stretch.

  • 4
    Do not bolt before "Time"

The final encore is Inception's "Time," and it is the last thing you hear every night. Leave early to beat traffic and you miss the one everyone came for.

  • 5
Expect a rock show, not a symphony

Drums are chest-level loud, Zimmer switches between bass, synth, guitar and banjo, and there is no conductor anywhere.

  • 6
Pick seats for the stage, not the screen

A fan in a side section at Co-op Live in 2025 spent the whole night craning his neck. Upper-tier center gets the full stacked stage, while the floor gets performers moving through the crowd.

  • 7
    Learn five names

Guthrie Govan (guitar), Lebo M (Lion King), Loire Cotler (Dune), Mariko Muranaka (cello) and Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator, when she is on the run). Zimmer introduces each one and tells their story.

  • 8
    Film it

Zimmer encourages photos and video, even when venue staff say otherwise.

  • 9
    Merch

The numbered art prints are what sell out, and they sell out online, not at the arena. The programme is the keepsake fans rate.

What It's Actually Like

A Rock Band With a Choir Attached, and Nobody Holding a Baton

Walk in expecting a hushed orchestra night and you'll be recalibrating within a minute. Zimmer runs the show from the middle of the band, with guitars and drums at the core and the orchestra and choir built around them. At the 2016 Bordeaux stop, SoundTrackFest noted there was no conductor at center at all, and the format played like a rock concert. A decade later in Adelaide (October 15, 2026), the night opened with thunder and lightning sound effects, heavy analogue synth and loud drums before Zimmer walked down a staircase, picked up an electric bass and started "Like a Dog Chasing Cars." The Dark Knight section hits like a metal set. You feel the kick drums in your ribs.

You Won't See a Single Movie Clip

The screens behind the band never show the films. A fan blogging an April 2017 tour stop wrote that the big screen showed visuals for the songs "but no movie clips," and AP reported before the 2024 tour that the show uses "not a single frame from any of the films he's referencing." Zimmer told CTV he wanted to find out whether the music could "stand on its own two feet." What you get instead is abstract: a red line drawn across the screen during The Thin Red Line at Radio City Music Hall in 2017, a disco ball turning the arena into deep space for Interstellar, a spinning top during "Time" in 2026. If you're bringing someone who only knows the movies, warn them.

“A film score concert that was really a rock concert in disguise.”

Zimmer Talks Between Suites, Mostly About How Scared He Is

He stops to tell stories before almost every block, and the running joke is that he shouldn't be up there at all. The 2016 tour booklet said "The thought of playing live in a Tour terrifies me." He told CTV in 2024 he has "about as much stagecraft as a dead lobster," and he opened the 2026 Adelaide show with a deadpan "Evening all" before explaining he normally hides in his studio. The stories are worth hearing: Tony Scott before Crimson Tide, Heath Ledger and the Aurora shooting before "Aurora" (Bordeaux 2016 and Radio City 2017), Christopher Nolan's one-line Interstellar pitch at The O2 Arena on December 1, 2025. He's blunt about his weaker films too. At the April 24, 2025 opener of his Australian tour, he called X-Men: Dark Phoenix a "dog" of a movie and played the score anyway so his friends could perform it. The humor is dry; a fan at Co-op Live in December 2025 thought it didn't always land with a British crowd.

The Band Members Get Star Billing

Fans come home knowing the players by name, because Zimmer spends real time on them. Guitarist Guthrie Govan has been on every tour since 2016, and at The O2 in 2025 Zimmer said Govan "plays something completely different every night after 250 shows." Lebo M has sung the Lion King suite on every tour, lately with his daughter Refi, and at Oakland in October 2024 the room audibly reacted when Zimmer revealed she was his daughter. When cellist Tina Guo was out with COVID on that same 2024 run, Zimmer told the crowd Mariko Muranaka "had to learn the entire songs in just 24hrs." Expect the band introductions to take several minutes. Nobody minds.

Every Night Ends on "Time," So Don't Leave

The one fixed point in a decade of setlists is the ending. Inception's "Time" closed the June 3, 2016 Bordeaux show, the July 25, 2017 Radio City show, the October 3, 2024 Oakland show and every one of the 16 analyzed 2026 setlists on setlist.fm. On The Next Level it starts with Zimmer alone at a grand piano in a single spotlight before the strings swell in behind him. At Radio City, a fan watched "a lot of people" head for the exits before the encore, then rush back to their seats when it started. The Lion King suite earlier in the night is where the arena stands up (more on that in Fan Culture), but "Time" is where people go quiet. Be the person already sitting down.

It's Loud, and the Mix Splits People

This isn't a soft night, and the sound gets strong opinions in both directions. A fan at a September 2024 arena show (Ascribe Magazine) called it "the best mix I have heard at a stadium show." Others hear the opposite. At Bordeaux in 2016, SoundTrackFest found the percussion, electronics and guitars buried the orchestra and choir in the second half. The April 2017 fan blogger wrote "the show was extremely loud" and said the Man of Steel climax "just sounded like a lot of high-pitched noise." If you're sensitive to volume, this is a show where people specifically report it.

Hans Zimmer Live: The Next Level (2025-2027)

The Next Level opened on October 12, 2025 in Oberhausen, Germany, and played 50 sold-out European arena shows in 17 countries for more than 600,000 fans, according to Zimmer's official site. Two German dates (Frankfurt on November 3 and Mannheim on November 6, 2025) never happened and were cancelled outright with refunds. The run went through Asia and Australia in fall 2026, and a 30-date North American leg runs February 17 to April 11, 2027 at North American arenas. Zimmer described it at The O2 as "a slightly different show, back to my roots, with a bit more electronica."

A Wall of Analogue Synth and a Bass Line to Open

The arena goes black to the sound of a thunderstorm, and a wall of faintly glowing consoles comes up at the back of the stage. The Upcoming's O2 reviewer compared it to "the bridge of a submarine." That wall is Giorgio III, a custom modular synthesizer built by French designer SynTesla, with ten cabinets on stage. Then Zimmer comes down the stairs, straps on an electric bass and starts "Like a Dog Chasing Cars," which opened 14 of 16 analyzed 2026 shows. Earlier tours opened on Dune's "House Atreides," so if you've been before, the first five minutes are where you'll notice the change.

Performers Drop From the Ceiling and Rise From the Floor

The stage is stacked in levels, with soloists at the front, drummers behind and an upper deck reached by a large lift. Mariko Muranaka descends from above in a vast red gown for "To Every Captive Soul" from Hannibal, surrounded by a choir carrying candles. At Co-op Live, a singer in a crystal-covered bodysuit was raised out of the back of the floor seating, lit like a disco ball. During Interstellar, aerialist Nina Treiber spins on a trapeze under a single white spotlight. Reviewers in Adelaide named the rest of the core crew: Andy Pask on bass (a Zimmer collaborator of five decades), Guthrie Govan, violinist Alexandra Tirsu, Veronika Vitazkova on flute and shawm, the Nairobi Chamber Choir, Lebo M, Loire Cotler and Lisa Gerrard.

How the Night Runs

Act I is the dark half: the Dark Knight trilogy, Dune's "Paul's Dream," Man of Steel, Hannibal and "Chevaliers de Sangreal," Dunkirk's "Tick Tock," Sherlock Holmes's "Discombobulate," then a Gladiator block that ends on "Now We Are Free." The Upcoming called that the "first true goosebump moment," and the Adelaide crowd roared the moment Zimmer announced it. Act II opens with Inception's "Dream Is Collapsing," adds Angels & Demons, Pearl Harbor, a new F1 theme and Dune: Part Two, then builds through Interstellar ("Day One," "Coward," "S.T.A.Y.") into the Lion King suite. The Pirates of the Caribbean block makes up most of the encore. Six of the 16 analyzed shows skipped the encore break and played straight through.

Where to Sit

A fan in section 111 at Co-op Live, on the right side, spent the night looking hard to his right and said his neck hurt by the end. The A2Z Soundtrack fan guide recommends upper-tier center over the floor, since the show plays to the stacked stage and the rear screen. The trade-off is real, though: some performers appear in the floor seating, so floor seats get close-ups nobody upstairs sees. Australian face values on this leg ran AUD 125 to AUD 265 (about $82 to $175) for reserved seats, with VIP tiers from AUD 399 to AUD 899 (about $262 to $590).

What Fans Gripe About

Reviews of this run are almost all raves, so the complaints are small and specific. The rear screen's AI-looking imagery felt "a bit under-whelming" to the Co-op Live fan next to the live staging. InDaily's Adelaide reviewer thought the EDM-flavored F1 section "could have used dancers." The Music said the strobe-heavy visualizers suit some pieces better than others and warned that people expecting the soundtrack versions may be surprised by how much has been rearranged.

What's Exclusive

The official store sells The Next Level tour tee, a Next Level programme in English and German, a tour poster, a "Tracklist" tee and mug, plectrum sets and a run of limited-edition numbered art prints. The prints are the collector pull: "Hope in Darkness" is 1 of 58, "Stars" is 1 of 91, several others are 1 of 182, and three ("Deep Night," "Infinity," "King of the Savannah") are already sold out. A limited-edition silk scarf tops the range. Older 2022 and 2023 tour tees and programmes are still listed.

The Strategy

Buy the programme at the show if you want it that night, but know it has no setlist in it (check setlist.fm if you want the titles). Tees, caps, posters and programmes all sit in the official online store, so there's no reason to queue for them. The items that actually sell out are the numbered art prints, and those sell out online, not at the arena.

Quality Verdict

The Next Level tour tee is 100% organic cotton. The programme is the item fans rate: the A2Z Soundtrack fan guide calls it worth buying, and the Co-op Live fan described it as large and full-colour, with articles and a filmography.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a loud, light-heavy rock show built from film scores, with Zimmer playing bass, synth and guitar in a band of around 19 players plus choir and soloists. There's no conductor and no film footage. The original voices are often on stage: Lebo M sings the Lion King suite and Loire Cotler sings the Dune pieces.

Plan on 2h 45m to 3h 15m including the intermission. setlist.fm's average setlist for 2026 runs 38 pieces, grouped into film suites.

He starts at the listed time, and there's no opener to sit through. At Co-op Live in December 2025, general admission doors opened at 18:30 for a 19:30 start, and a 2017 Radio City show began "promptly at 8 p.m." The big exception was a venue problem rather than his: the security lockout at Oakland Arena in October 2024.
