What Is It Like to See Ezra Collective Live?
A London jazz quintet whose drummer stops the band to preach about joy, whose horn players climb into the crowd, and whose audience crouches on the floor before the whole room jumps at once.
What to Know Before You Go
- 1Say hello when they tell you to.
Early in the set someone on stage asks everyone to greet the strangers around them. At one February 2023 show the follow-up was salsa with that stranger.
- 2Look up and look behind you.
Trumpeter Ife Ogunjobi and saxophonist James Mollison often start the show from the balcony or the middle of the floor.
- 3Your seat is decorative.
In seated halls the crowd stands and dances anyway, stalls and circle alike.
- 4There will be a sermon.
Femi Koleoso, the drummer, stops the music for a speech about choosing joy, youth clubs or grassroots venues. Not everyone in the room wants the speech, and he gives it anyway.
- 5Learn a horn line, not a lyric.
Most songs are instrumental, so the singalong is the "Victory Dance" trumpet melody and whatever riff Mollison throws to the crowd.
- 6Get low when you're told.
The finale has the whole room crouching and then jumping on cue.
- 7Opener
Pa Salieu, the rapper on new single "Only Love," supports on the 2027 UK dates, including four nights at [O2 Academy Brixton](/venues/brixton-academy). No support act is documented for the 2026 Australian and Asian dates or announced for the November North American run.
- 8Expect guests.
Jorja Smith, Jme, Kojey Radical, Emeli Sandé and Yazmin Lacey have all walked on for a song at recent shows.

What It's Actually Like
Femi Preaches From Behind the Drums
The bandleader is the drummer, and at some point in the night he stops playing, takes a mic and gives a speech. It is usually about joy versus happiness. At the O2 Institute Birmingham in late 2024 he told the room, "Whether you woke up feeling happy or sad this morning, one thing you can do is choose to feel joy... So, for the next six minutes, that's what we're gonna do" (Redbrick). At the Royal Albert Hall in November 2023 the speech ran long enough that The Spectator noted it never quite reached a conclusion, and at the BBC 6 Music Festival in Manchester in March 2025 he switched to youth clubs: "If you fix the foundation, suddenly the building can stand strong" (Northern Soul). Not everyone wants church. At the Barrowland Ballroom in November 2024, men behind one fan who wrote up the night on Substack heckled him to get on with the music, and at the Astra Kulturhaus in October 2024 a fan blogger watched the crowd's attention drift. At the Barrowland he simply finished the speech.
The Horns Won't Stay on Stage
Ogunjobi and Mollison treat the whole room as the stage. They opened from the balcony at the Eventim Apollo in February 2023 and again at the O2 Institute in 2024, then came down to join the band (Rhythm Passport; Redbrick). At the Albert Hall in Manchester in April 2023 they crowd-surfed into the middle of the floor to play "Welcome to My World" (The Mancunion). At OVO Arena Wembley in November 2024 the first notes of the night were Ogunjobi's trumpet from the middle of the arena floor, before strobes brought on the rest of the band (NW Londoner). If you're stuck at the back, there's a decent chance the band comes to you.
“There is no audience, there is no band, we are all members of the Ezra Collective.”
It's a Dance Floor, Even in a Concert Hall
Come expecting a jazz gig with polite applause after the solos and you'll be wrong within a song. One fan at the Barrowland saw people "jumping around and dancing like I've rarely seen before," and mini mosh circles opened across that sold-out ballroom (The Skinny). At the O2 Institute nobody held phones up because they were too busy dancing (Redbrick). Seated rooms don't change it: at the Sydney Opera House on May 31, 2025, the entire audience stood for the whole show, which the Music Hoarder blog called unusual for that building, and the normally seated upstairs at the Albert Hall in Manchester got up for "Victory Dance." Back in 2018 at KOKO, Clash described the floor as "a seething mesh of sweating limbs."
Covers From Fela Kuti to UK Garage
A cover is always coming, and it could be from anywhere. Fela Kuti is the constant: "Lady," "Zombie" and "Water No Get Enemy" have each turned up six to eight times on setlist.fm, and at the Astra Kulturhaus in October 2024 the Fela homage was the crowd's favourite moment. Sun Ra's "Space Is the Place" became Mollison's showcase, and at O2 Academy Bristol in February 2023 the crowd held up phone lights while the stage went dark for it (Epigram). Shanks & Bigfoot's UK garage tune "Sweet Like Chocolate" has been in sets since 2018. Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" landed at Wembley in 2024. At the Roundhouse launch in September 2026 the encore threw in "NUEVAYoL" and Jme's "Man Don't Care" with Jme on stage (setlist.fm).
Five Soloists, and the Keys Usually Steal It
Every member gets a solo. Joe Armon-Jones on keys is the one reviewers keep naming: "mad solos" on "Victory Dance" at the O2 Institute (Redbrick), the night's highlight for the Astra Kulturhaus blogger, a slow, calm solo right before the climax at the Opera House. TJ Koleoso never stands still, shuffling across the stage with his bass held high (Tim Edgeworth's write-up of the 6 Music Festival, 2025). Femi's drum solo was the high point of the Sydney Opera House night and of the Fringe by the Sea tent in North Berwick in August 2025.
Church or Carnival, and the Fun Some Find Forced
The comparison everyone reaches for is church. The Skinny left the Barrowland in 2024 "feeling like they've been to church. Or is it Carnival?" and called Femi the band's "unofficial pastor." At Glastonbury's West Holts stage in June 2023, Clash saw people in the crowd visibly moved, some in tears. There's a real dissent, though. The Spectator's Royal Albert Hall review found some passages drifting into bland jazz-funk and three guest ballads in a row stalling the night, and the Astra Kulturhaus blogger read the joy speech as self-congratulation.
Here Because of Hope Tour (2026-2027)
The tour follows Here Because of Hope (September 11, 2026, Partisan), a 17-track album in three movements (West Africa, the Caribbean, the UK) with spoken introductions by Letitia Wright and guests Pa Salieu, Lila Iké, Leona Lewis and Libianca (Shore Fire Media). It debuted at No. 1, and DJ Mag reported they are "the first UK jazz group in history to go to number one in the UK Albums Chart." The run went from summer festivals to an album-week launch at the Roundhouse, then Australia and Asia in October, five North American club and theater dates in November, and a European and UK leg from February 2027 that ends with four nights at Brixton in March (Songkick).
The Album, Played in Three Movements
At the Roundhouse on September 16, 2026, they played the new record as written: three blocks of songs with Letitia Wright's recorded interludes between them, Pa Salieu walking on for "Only Love," Lila Iké for "Well Organised," and a Max Romeo "Chase the Devil" cover tucked into the Caribbean section (setlist.fm). Only then came the encore of older songs, "Ajala," "Juan Pablo" and "God Gave Me Feet for Dancing" with Yazmin Lacey singing. That's a launch-night format. On the road it loosens: the Astor Theatre on September 30 mixed "Sweet Echo," "Birdie Sings" and "El Corazon" with "No Confusion," "The Herald" and "Ajala," and Way Out West in August ran 14 songs from "Streets Is Calling" to the same closer.
Who's Opening
Pa Salieu, the rapper on "Only Love," is billed for the O2 Academy Brixton dates and is listed by Songkick on 12 dates of the tour. Joy Anonymous is listed on six. No band is documented before Ezra on the Australian and Asian headline shows, and Shore Fire's announcement names no support for the November North American run.
Club Rooms Again, Then a Brixton Residency
After headlining a 12,000-capacity arena in 2024, this tour mostly drops back to rooms where the horns can reach the back: Bimbo's 365 Club and The Regent in California in November, Toyosu PIT in October (doors 6:00 PM, show 7:00 PM, ¥9,000, about $60, per Time Out Tokyo). The 2027 leg moves up to bigger European halls in February, then UK academies, two nights at Aviva Studios and the four-night Brixton run. In September the band also played two sets each at Rough Trade Bristol and Circuit in Kingston for album week.
The Fan Verdict So Far
Warm, with the guests doing a lot of the talking. At Love Supreme in Sussex on July 3, 2026, their first time back at the festival in ten years, they headlined the main stage, picked the Friday "Temple of Joy" bill, brought out Leona Lewis, Kojey Radical and Yazmin Lacey as surprises, and dance circles formed across the field (Hive; God Is In The TV). In April, a ballot-entry fan night at Colour Factory with Jazz re:freshed had them play the 2016 debut EP Chapter 7 in full, with Tomorrow's Warriors alumni Nubya Garcia, Theon Cross, Moses Boyd and Shabaka Hutchings joining; Femi said they'd asked "some of our friends from the youth club to come and play with us" (Angus Batey).

Merch
Merch intel is thin: we found no fan reports of venue prices, sell-outs or quality. The collectible items are records. The Here Because of Hope Photobooth Series 005 special edition LP: about $50 (€43 at Rough Trade). The Chapter 7 10th Anniversary Edition: about $31 (€27), out around the April 2026 show where they played that EP in full. Album week is the time to pair a record with a set: in September 2026 Rough Trade Bristol and Circuit in Kingston each hosted two sets (setlist.fm), and a 2022 Rough Trade instore ticket was about $19 (£15) (Derbyshire Times). At their June 2025 Shoreditch pop-up, "exclusive merchandise" was hidden around the space for visitors to find (London x London).

Frequently Asked Questions
A dance party run by a jazz band. Expect afrobeat and salsa grooves more than polite jazz-club applause, a Fela Kuti cover and a solo from every member, with Joe Armon-Jones's keys solo usually the one people talk about afterward.
1h 25m to 1h 40m on the current tour, per timed setlists on setlist.fm. The Astor Theatre in September 2026 was the short end, the Roundhouse album launch the long end.
Usually 5 to 20 minutes after the listed start. In 2026 they came on at 8:35 PM at the Astor Theatre and 8:45 PM at The Tivoli against 8:30 PM listings, and at 8:50 PM at the Roundhouse (setlist.fm).
No. The set leans on afrobeat, salsa, reggae and UK garage as much as jazz. Femi told Crack in 2019 that a jazz band "doesn't have to look like five guys in suits playing in an elite club," and the crowd behaves accordingly.
Yes, if you want to move. The Spectator called their 2023 Royal Albert Hall show possibly "the gig of the year," and the Music Hoarder blog called the Sydney Opera House night "a raucous, non-stop, dance party." If you want to sit and listen to solos in silence, this is the wrong band.
"Victory Dance," "Juan Pablo" and "God Gave Me Feet for Dancing" are the ones the room waits for, and they are among their most-played live songs on setlist.fm alongside "You Can't Steal My Joy" and "No Confusion." "Ajala" and "The Herald" get sung back, and the Fela Kuti covers are reliable crowd favourites.
The 2024 tour peaked with one arena night at Wembley; the 2026 run mostly plays clubs and theaters and leans on the new album's three-part shape. The closer and the crowd rituals carried straight over.
Families do. At Fringe by the Sea in August 2025 the tent had grandparents dancing with grandchildren, and the reviewer called it "a great, family friendly night."
